My DH is going to relocate to NYC for work. Since our youngest is still in high school, I will be staying home and he will get an apartment and commute home once a month (or we get to visit :cool1:).

Our question - where should he look for a nice place (1 bedroom), close to transportation (he will work at 5th Avenue and 18th) HOPEFULLY under $2000?

Many of his new co workers think the New Jersey side is "suburban," but hey, that's what we are. He is also contemplating taking his car or leaving it at home. Living in Manhattan is appealing, but you are taxed more if you live and work there?

This is a new, scary but exciting change for our family. Would appreciate any input from fellow DISers.

Thanks!!!

Jersey City would be a good choice or Hoboken and the further out he comes into Jersey the more reasonable the rents. He could consider Summit, Morristown or Westfield since they have pretty reliable train service. I live in Somerset County and even though I have neighbors and friends that go into the City to work - it is a longer commute but it's beautiful out here with great schools & parks but it's definitely more suburban, no, more country. I live less than a mile from farms, protected farmland, Sourland preserve and it's not as congested as the eastern part of NJ

If he lives in NJ he will get taxed as well but he can find apartments much cheaper than in NYC.

PM me and I'll be glad to give you more info about Somerset County.

He might get a studio for $2000, not going to be in the best neighborhood. http://www.mns.com/manhattan_rental_market_report Parking spots are probably around $500 a month. Have him look into the other boroughs, or NJ. I'm 8 miles from NYC, but a 45 minute bus ride in during rush hour, and there are 1 bedroom apartments for under $1000, but I'm in the burbs. You also have to factor in commuting costs, plus COL.

Yonkers is a bit of a commute on the train but is doable and would not be too expensive to live in. Parking in Manhattan is crazy expensive. Did you know that subway/commuter costs are tax deductible and some companies even allow for Metro Cards to be refilled pre-tax from the employees paycheck?
(I work for a company that is headquartered in Manhattan)

Have you looked into a sublet? Maybe you could get something reasonable there. I think in the Upper West Side above 90th the prices get a little better but the neighborhood gets a tad sketchier. Don't discount Queens or Brooklyn either.

I grew up in Westfield. You can find a lot of nice places to live there. The train is in the middle of the town a great deal of people commute every morning into NYC. Maybe something to consider especially if you move their permanently after your youngest graduates high school.

Jersey City or Hoboken both have good deals in safe neighborhoods with easy transportation accessibility. Brooklyn and Queens are great, too - he could find something in Astoria or Long Island City, Queens far under $2K. Same thing for Brooklyn - he might want to look for a studio in Brooklyn Heights or a studio or 1BR in Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens or downtown Brooklyn. (Downtown Brooklyn especially has a lot of new construction luxury rentals with lots of amenities and studios hovering slightly above the $2K mark, which will be good if your DH wants amenities like a doorman, laundry in the apartment, a fitness center, etc.)

Thanks everyone!!!

Hoboken and Jersey City are two of the places he's interested in renting. There are some nice places that are close to the transportation lines.

mpf: thanks for the commuter information, I will have him check that out with his company. :thumbsup2

For the next two years (at least), he would like to consider living closer to the city. Once our youngest is in college, than we would probably buy in the farther NJ 'burbs.

Find out if he lives in NJ and works in NY if he will be taxed in both states also . I live in NY and my father and sister both work in NJ they are taxed in both states !! ..

Also dont forget Staten Island ... Nice place to live on the south shore .. Train and ferry are cheap and it is about the same time to get in from NJ ... Just throwing it out there for ya !!
