For all who have disembarked and flown home out of NYC, which airport did you choose (if you had a choice) and what time did you make your flight for? We're trying to get flights home to Seattle after the WBTA and are clueless on how long it takes to get anywhere in NYC so any advice anyone has would be great! TIA :-)

My order of preference...

JFK

Then if JFK isn't an option EWR.

And only if there is no other way to get anywhere (and I'm talking I'll check Amtrak or MegaBus or BoltBus before getting to this point) will I even look at LGA. It was bad enough before they started the reconstruction - but now getting to and from is ridiculous. More than once people have abandoned cabs or car services and walked upwards of a mile with luggage to get there.

At least with JFK or EWR there is public transportation on subways/trains and AirTrain.

JFK
Not laGuardia for a myriad of reasons

I'd travel to ISP/on Long Island before using LGA
EWR

EWR then JFK

From our house (about 25 mins north of NYC) JFK is the hardest to get to due to traffic. I won't even look at flights out of LGA for the next year or so. EWR is the easiest for us to get to as we avoid the city altogether and its my preferred airport.

Have to fly out of JFK on Monday to Budapest to take our Adventures By Disney Danube River Cruise and that is the airport ABD booked for us (JFK tends to be cheaper on some international flights over EWR). I am flying back home to EWR though.

This is so good to know! We will definitely be crossing LGA off the list! Any idea how long it takes to get to EWR in the morning? I'm figuring that we probably shouldn't book anything home until 1:00pm or later to give us enough time to get to the airport and through security.

JFK about a week after the cruise got back.....next time will be tourist before, cruise after, then a one night stay and fly home. I would not want to deal with NYC traffic on the same day as the cruise no matter what time.

We stayed near the port and it took about 3 hours to get to the airport, almost missed our flight because we underestimated the time to get there from our hotel, so as I said in my previous post I would never do a flight the same day as embarking or disembarking.

For a cruise EWR then JFK. La Guardia as a last ditch only. For just hanging in the city JFK and EWR honestly depend on whatever is cheapest. I like JFK but if I save 50+ I'll do EWR in a heart beat.

3 hours?! What airport and what time or mode of transportarion? I've never taken 3 hours even in bad traffic 2 was the max to JFK. Train is usually 40 minutes if that unless your subway or LIRR gets stuck.

Going out in the morning should not have bad traffic as everyone is trying to get into the city not out. If you are super worried about traffic you can always take a cab to penn station then NJ transit to Newark stop to grab the airtran. Pretty easy and affordable per a head.

It was a cab and traffic was terrible and we live in L.A., so we are no stranger to traffic. We figured we would have more than enough time to get there. The only reason we made our flight is the plane was delayed taking off from the previous airport, which delayed our flight. Of course we also got to be the lucky ones selected for extra screening on top of it all.

I go to NYC for work, so i'm familiar with flying in and out of Newark. Never had a problem out of there, other than the airport food is pretty bad, so i just make sure to eat before leaving manhattan. I just give myslef plenty of time for tunnel teaffic etc.

Does the disembarkation really make traffic "nuts"-level? I've been toying with the thought of staying 1-night and flying home the next day and maybe catching a show. Hmmm, too many options!! We're using miles so it really is just a matter of choosing the day and airport (and time to fly home...I'm surprised at how many options we have for flying out to Seattle using a combo of Alaska/America/Virgin America). I really do appreciate the heads-up about LGA...really sounds like a hot mess :scared1:

Well I live in Manhattan and prefer EWR
I think from the cruise terminal that is also a fine option. Otherwise JFK.

After our NYC cruise last year we flew out of LGA. It was a very quick bus trip and we arrived with 2 or so hours to spare before departure (around midday). Although at that time the redevelopments weren't causing any noticeable delays.

La Guardia is okay for when you arrive but I wouldn't recommend it to go back home. Once, they changed the gate without announcing it (we realized it 5 minutes before boarding). There is always a queue and it can take a whole hour from the moment you leave the gate to the moment you take off. And if for some reason your departure is delayed while you're in the queue, you are stuck there. Last time, we had to stay put for 2 hours and a half before take off.
