NY Times Article: WWoHP

I suppose it's my Disney bias, but I just do not see how you can compare WWofHP to WDW. I'm really a big fan of HP, but I just have no desire to be crammed into that little space.

This quote from the article struck me. I have a feeling this would be my reaction, except never in a million years would I wait 2 1/2 hours to get into a store.

Quote..........
"After waiting two and a half hours to reach the door of Ollivanders a few days ago, members of the Cross family from Boca Raton, Fla., felt the sting of letdown. “It wasn’t that interesting,” said Kaylee, 15. “It was a little cheesy.”

Agree! 2 1/2 is a lot of time. Back in June we waited about 45 mintues to get in Olivanders. My Daughter got picked to select the wand. If she didn't get picked I probably would have asked Universal for my 45 minutes back. :)

Back in the day (early 90's), I waited three hours in 90 degree heat at Six Flags to get on Batman. I must have been 11 or 12, and I’d just hit the height requirement of 48 inches. The ride broke down when there were 10 people in front of us. We waited another 45 minutes to get on. And it was the *most amazing ride ever*.

Nowadays, if I don’t have a Fastpass for something with more than a 15 minute standby line, I won’t bother.

My point is that if you have enormous expectations of something, a lot of times, you won’t mind dealing with a lot of not so great conditions in order to have that experience. Why do people drive to Walt Disney World? Because the experience of being there is worth it to them, even though a lot of times they are spending four, five, six times the hours in the car than they would on a plane. Why do people give terrible Broadway shows standing ovations? Because they paid $136.50 for their seat, and damn anyone to heck who is going to tell them they wasted their money on a sub-par night of theater.

As to the whole Universal/WWoHP v. Disney argument, it’s been the same back and forth since Universal opened. The bottom line is that most people aren’t going to spend a week going to Universal. Until and unless they expand the WWoHP, there isn’t enough to do fore more than a few hours there, other than wait on line.

Disney doesn’t need to “answer” Harry Potter. It needs to address its own guest issues.

All great points Amy. Peoples expectations have a lot to do with it. And you're right, tourists coming to Orlando are likely to spend 3 days at Universal and still spend 4 or 5 days at Disney World. Getting tourists to Orlando to enjoy a theme park vacation is the key. I guess its more of an industry perspective versus a competition perspective.

Heck, I love Harry Potter, but I'd rather go on the Mummy than wait on line.

Maybe its because my kids are too little. But I dont see the point for us, to go to universal. Yes, Ive read the books. Liked them. But I cant see us having a great time packed in like sardines with a double stroller. Also, Im not a fan of the whole fat profiling thing, so I dont want to go for that as well.
Im sure as my kids get older we will end up there but for now Ill stick with the Mickey ears and the only wand we will get will be a princess one :)

Universal has so much more to offer than WWoHP. I love the resort hotels and some of the attractions at IOA are off the charts.

Which attractions at IOA do you think are off the charts Aaron? I have always wanted to ride Spiderman, but nothing else makes me go "I have to go there!" What are your favorite rides at IOA?

Actually, the Spiderman attraction is my favorite attraction anywhere. Dr. Suess has always been a favorite of mine so Suess Landing is a big hit with us. I think why I like IOA so much is because the themed lands are lands I can connect with. I've always been a fan of Marvel, Suess, some of the catoons in Toon Lagoon, and even Jurassic Park. I was never a big fan of the Lost Continent so I'm glad they're replacing it with Potter. I always thought IOA was very well done. I do wish they would add a few more attractions to the park. The Forbidden Journey was a nice addition and hopefully the rest of the Lost Continent will be replaced with more Potter attractions.

All this hoo-haa about WWoHP.

DS didn't fit in most stores. Couldn't go on the rides. Weren't shows. Crowded. Definitely not designed for wheelchair-bound folks. Too bad - he likes HP.

That's definitely interesting how Meg Crofton toured it and spoke of it. I'm assuming she did so to see what they were up against.

Maybe this is why I can't get excited about Universal. Other than Suess, none of their themes really interest me. I'm not into Super heroes or comics and believe it or not, I've never watched an entire episode of the Simpsons or seen any of the Spider Man movies or even Jurassic Park. Maybe one day...

I enjoyed Harry Potter - Actually planned the last Christmas trip around it. Went on the coldest day of the trip - 12/26 - waited for an hour and half to get on the ride.

My kids enjoyed it only once (later that evening they did it again without a wait, but they did not like it. - the thrill was gone). They enjoyed the Rip Ride Rock it at Universal Studios better.

Yes, the people will come see Harry Potter and it is exciting. The question is will they do it again?

We may go back in the future (a couple of years) once the lines die so they can actually get into the wand shop. It was definitely a long wait for that and we passed.

Interesting article. Thanks Aaron. I enjoy Universal but Disney has the parks for me. Islands of Adventure has a lot of thrill rides that I don't do. I have problems when I do Spiderman. It makes me sick.

I really enjoy Universal with the older tamer attractions. I don't do the Simpsons ride since that is like a roller coaster now.

Universal is a every now and then park for me but I visit WDW several times a week.

I read something the other day that said WDW was about the memories and Universal Orlando was about fun. That says it for me. I like the feeling I get when I enter a Disney theme park, I can suspend reality for awhile. Except for the Harry Potter area at Universal I don't get that feeling.

I do wish Universal had done a better job of marketing the fact that Harry Potter is an area in one of their theme parks and not an entire theme park.

interesting article!!
i find it annoying the way they keep referring to it as the harry potter "park".

we're not universal fans at all. we like jurasic park and MIB and that's about it.

we haven't been to potterville yet, but i know we can't ride the coasters so i don't know what's left.
