Nutty iPad photographers.

I really don't much care what people do. But...when I'm standing there, in the spot that I've been standing in for 40 mins, and some guy comes along and reaches his arm out, with his tablet or even camera, way out so he can get an unobstructed view...well, I'm sorry, but he has now taken away any chance I may have had of getting any shots of the parade coming toward me!!! Drives me nuts.
Tablet, camera...whatever. Way too many people are figuring 'you first, right after me' when taking shots. Their desire to take that great shot certainly is much more important than anyone else being able to get good photos.
I realize that sometimes people get carried away, and can forget there are others around them...for instance, it's the parade and a character heads over to your child. Well, of course you want that great shot of your child, and I'm okay with waiting while you do so. It's easy to forget there is someone next to you, trying to get photos as well.

It's when people hold those lit screens up high....then that's all you can see! At least video cameras of old had a viewfinder...no way you were really impacting anyone else's view! I wish cameras today offered a viewfinder. I would much rather be sitting there, taping something, without that huge screen all lit up. Looking through the viewfinder is so much more polite.

And as to why anyone would go around taping stuff to begin with, hence living life through the lens? Sometimes it's a good thing. For example....my step-mother can't travel to my dd's shows in RI. So, when she has a big solo, I ask if I can tape it so that I can let my step-mother see it. Or, when my nephew in Seattle got married last year, his Japanese grandparents weren't able to be there...too old and ill. So, my sister-in-law walked around with her iPad.....in FaceTime mode. That way her parents could be part of the day. I did overhear some saying that it would have been nice if she could have put down the iPad and enjoyed the day....seems they had no idea what she was doing! So, sometimes there are good reasons! Not always, but sometimes.

Would I take my iPad-mini to the parks? Nope. I bring it to WDW with me, but couldn't be bothered worrying about it in a park. I have my iPhone and my point and shoot camera. I prefer the camera for photos but the phone is okay in a pinch.

When the Kodak Brownie was first introduced there was a similar reaction from the non-users. But the difference I think between other cameras and the tablet/smartphone use today is that people generally still held all those other kinds of cameras at their own eye level (older ones at waist level). With tablets and smartphones people hold them over their head and that's when they really become obtrusive and get in people's way. That's why so many photographers really hate the things when they get used as cameras.

Some truth to that but the DSLRs had then and do know have tilt screens so you could hold them over your head, same with video cams. And lots of people did that and you'd have your view blocked by somebody holding their camera up in front of you so they could shoot over people's heads. Not as many DSLRs now so not as noticeable. Also after a couple of years it started to become the norm that holding your camera high for an extended period of tine wasn't appropriate and it started to decline.

I think that we'll see the same with tablets and smartphones. Right now it's new technology that 1. Users haven't yet figured out what's appropriate behaviour when using one and 2. People around growing accustomed to them. Both will happen if the past is any guide.

I always try to be considerate of others around me when at WDW- and honestly, we go frequently enough that I don't take pictures anymore. I would LOVE to have a wifi capable device to use for the whole FP+ debacle but have no idea what to look for (I am techno-stupid… possible the only person in the world who doesn't text, I don't use a contact list or know how to add to it, etc… really, it isn't important to me). Can you make some suggestions as to what I should be looking for? Do they really not need service plans to work?

leebee, I am right there with you! I really hope that by the time I go to WDW again there will be some kind of sticky on just what technology we need to have to make the most of FP+. I am only slightly more tech savvy than you. A couple of years ago I finally figured out how to create a contact list and I have teens so I had to learn to text. I do not own a smart phone, ipod, ipad, tablet, laptop or any other such device. Once the FP+ dust settles I would love for an expert to tell me the best, most economical device to buy (and maybe include a tutorial on how to use it :confused3).

But you know, apple makes it such a pain to move files around, you can't just pop in an sd card, I can sort of understand it.

You can just pop in an SD card to the iPad to upload your pictures,, i have the cable, its about 5 inches long

Hmm...probably the best way to go would be a refurbished ipod touch. I checked on ebay and found quite a few for under $50. look at this onme ending shortly... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-iPod-...0416?pt=Other_MP3_Players&hash=item43ca165690

I'm no techie. The first iPad I ever saw was at DTD in 4/2011. I watched a guy pull something the size of a notebook out of his backpack and held it up in front of World of Disney. I realized he was taking a picture and felt bad the dude didn't have a camera for vacation.

I don't think you need that first sentence - if you honestly didn't see an iPad for a year after they were released. :)

It's the dog-gone truth!! I'd heard of iPhones & iPods, but had never heard of iPads. It was a good while after the trip I saw a friend with one at church and I asked what it was.

I now own all three. :)

But I'll always remember the dude at DTD.

So I bring my mini ipad in my bag in the parks. I use it to watch movies or read while waiting in line.

Now if my camera/phone ( I have the nice Nokia phone that has a really good camera on it and my husband refers to it as a camera that happens to make calls) is dead, which happens in Disney. I use my mini ipad as back up camera until my phone/camera is recharged. And not I do not use it in dark rides, etc.. And I am not the person lifting up high, infact I am 5'1 so even if I did put my mini Ipad high up, it would not be very high because I am so short. :thumbsup2 Anyways I just wanted to point out that not everyone using the Ipad as a camera is an idiot, etc... I am just using it as a backup until my real camera is good.

First time I ever saw an actual ipad in use by a human being was in 2012.

I never really get why people find the need to record an entire show on their horrible ipads. Pretty selfish if you think of the people behind them cant see anything. And not to mention the light is really annoying for the entire cword behind them.

If you want to see the movie, go to youtube. Theres way better ones u there then any ipad can record.

Every Black Friday Target has a smart phone for Virgin Mobile on sale. Last year we bought 4 of them, two for the kids, two as backup, they were $19.99 each. Even without a plan they will work for internet in the parks. (by the way I personally only have a flip phone, don't want to upgrade because I spend enough time on the internet already)

My wife and I rarely ever use cell phones. As such, we can't see spending $100+ per month on cell/data service plans. We each have one of those cheapo $20 prepaid flip-phones from Target. We put $100 per year on our phones and still have minutes left at the end of the year.

However, I do like all the non-cellular capabilities of the iPhone and similar smart devices. There are many apps I find useful. So, I got an iPod Touch. It does almost everything an iPhone can do except I don't have to pay for a monthly service plan. It is wi-fi capable. So, I can use it in the parks.

Just for fun and since no one else linked to it: http://ipadisnotacamera.com/

People with iPads drive me bonkers! I would like to see around you iPad, not the blurry photo you're attempting to take over and over.
