So a co-worker went to a nutritionist and got an eating plan from a local nutritionist. The plan is supposed to help you firm up your body if you're not overweight.

She's lost a dress size in 3 weeks and looks better by following his plan and faithfully working out at least 5 times a week. (Which she already was doing.)

I got the eating plan from her and have started it. (I also already work out at least 5 times a week.) It's a low-carb diet, essentially. A lot of what the guy says is bullcarp, pardon my fish, but it IS working for her, and apparently a lot of the local body builders go to this guy when they want their bodies to LOOK better without doing extra work.

So, beyond co-worker and my committment to follow the plan at least until the first big bottle of protein shakes runs out, has anyone had any luck with this concept? Low carb, high protein. . .

That's pretty much the same plan I follow. It's a tried and true concept that works for most people. And most diet plans follow this principle but just repackage it to set themselves apart from other diet plans that preach the same thing.

Would you mind sharing?

I am soooo addicted to carbs......

Well, I ran the stats this evening. And for a low-fat-eating-vegetarian, it's actually perfect nutritionally, NOT low carb. Shows what I know. ;)

It's basically:

For Breakfast:

2 eggs or the equiv. in egg beaters (we don't keep eggs in our house, only egg beaters or egg whites.)

Toast or an English muffin or unsweetened cereal. (We only have light bread, light english muffins and Kashi Go-lean in my house. . .)

Protein shake for snack.

1 serving of a protein for lunch with 30-50g of complex carbs and/or a salad without a milky salad dressing. (Lite italian or somesuch.)

Protein shake for snack.

1 serving of a protein for dinner with vegetables.

Optional: protein shake and/or 1 T of natural peanut butter for snack.

And yes, as a vegetarian who only has low-fat, healthy, whole wheat foods in her house. . .it is actually a v. healthy plan. The only bad thing is that when I ran the averages of calories required for someone my size, it comes up about 700-900Kcal short. I'd prefer it to be 500-600Kcal short. But I'm not hungry throughout the day. In fact, I was just a little hungry, so I went and had a tablespoon of peanut butter. No hungry.

The plan says some things about not exercising late at night, but as DH can tell you, exercise is my hamster wheel. I do it as close to bedtime as possible so I will be tuckered out and will actually sleep through the night. Otherwise I have insomnia. It isn't pretty. (This learned from trial and error btw. . .)

Oh, I also found out about something called CLA today. Anyone ever heard of it? The claim is that if you are doing everything else right -eating right and exercising - it will give a little bit, not much, but a little bit of a boost to your weight loss, without any side effects. (If you're not doing everything else right, apparently, it won't help for squat.) It helps regulate the insulun levels, is the best guess. It's a fatty acid that's made from safflower oil and is cheap to buy. It was like $14.00 for 90 of the things, and you can take 3 a day. I'll try it, why not?

Update: Just went out and read some research on CLA. This study http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12923219 says it doesn't seem to do much good and may do some harm. . .go figure.

Hmmm. . .the more I read. . .the more mixed it becomes. The evidence that it may harm your body's ability to regulate insulin levels (I've got lots and lots of diabetes in my family, so this is what interests ME) is on v. shakey ground. http://www.nature.com/ijo/journal/v31/n7/abs/0803482a.html

I think I'll do some serious reading up on this in the next couple of days. . .

If your not getting enough calories, simply increase the portion sizes. Adding peanut butter will work as well, but use it sparingly. Even though it's a great source of EFA's, its still high in calories.

It depends on the type of workouts you are doing, but generally speaking, it's much better to work out earlier in the day than late at night. And it's funny that you say it makes you sleep better, because normally it has the opposite effect.

This is WORKING!

2.5 pounds (more or less) in 2 weeks. :thumbsup2

I've been on a plateau for so long and I've never lost pounds this fast at this weight.
