Does anyone know where I can find nutritional info on the food offered in the parks? Specifically the carb information. My son was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes so we need to count the carbs he eats to dose his insulin. We have been to Disney many times but this will be our first trip having to do this. TIA

You need to request that information at the restaurant.

I would post in the DISabilities forum as I know I've seen this mentioned before. There isn't really much information you can get up front and I've read a lot of complaints about not being able to get these sort of specifics for people who are diabetic or need low sodium, etc. We deal with multiple food allergies and even that is limited on some of the info you can get in advance.

As I understand it you may need to rely on your own abilities to estimate based on portion size as nutritional information is not readily available. Talking to the chef is your best bet though.

You can find some nutritional information out there but it is not official. I know there is some on Myfitnesspal so I am sure there are others. I would try googling Disney World nutritional information and see if you can at least get some estimates.

Disney does not post or give out any nutritional information ahead of time. I am not even sure they can give you specifics at the restaurant except for things that are prepackaged. The reasoning for this is that suppliers and menus change too often plus there will always be variability when things are made in the kitchen.

I would suggest getting an app or book (such as Calorie King) that will give basic information on how many carbs are in specific foods. Then you would have to figure out the serving sizes and do a bit of math. You can also look at making substitutions if needed though it would be limited to what the restaurant already has.

I agree with the previous poster. Get a copy of the Calorie King book. It's pretty small and easy to carry. That's what my husband uses as a Type 1 Diabetic. I would also talk to your doctor. The pancreas does not just stop making insulin. It tapers off so be sure to take that into consideration when dosing insulin.

My daughter is also T1D. Disney will give you absolution no useful information, which is disappointing. I found the calorie kingb website to be very helpful. They have a category for Fair/ carnival food which was good for carbs for soft pretzels, and funnel cakes. Also they have a huge database of restaurant food, so you can get a really good estimate. I recommend staying away from the no sugar added dessert, especially the sorbets from table service restaurants. They are huge and have more carbs than a modest slice of cake!
If you have any specific questions, let me know!

I think you'll probably be surprised at how good you already are at estimating carbohydrates. It becomes second nature after a while.

My DS was just diagnosed with type 1 so I'm right there with ya on navigating through this whole new world. It is very Overwhelming and we have a Disney Cruise trip in four weeks!

Thanks for the great suggestions everyone. I have ordered the calorie king book, have the app and will bring along a measuring cup...great tip.

I am a Registered Dietitian and I love Calorie King-very useful for estimating calories, protein and carbs. My oldest daughter has a couple food allergies and Disney is really good (when actually there-hard to find info ahead of time) at accomodating allergies at their restaurants. I would hope this would be the same with people with diabetes.

FWIW-allears.net has a section on navigating WDW with Diabetes.

My daughter is a T1D. We use calorie King and figwee app for estimating portions at restaurants that do not have Carb counts. I also carry around a small pocket scale and collapsible measuring cups with me.

It is all about estimation and blood sugar check again and again.

Unfortunately Disney will not be much help but a chef can come out and tell you what ingredients are in food items. It will be left up to you to estimate.

There are some things that already have carbs on them like that lovely Mickey Bar and Ice Cream Sandwich.

Good Luck! We just have to plan more as T1D parents. It will all work out!!!

You could try asking to see "the book" at CS locations. I know it includes detailed ingredients for everything, I'm not sure if that contains nutritional information as well.
