Number in party changing...easy to do?

I have all of my reservations made for our early November trip, and my inlaws tell us tonight that they have decided not to go. I know that adding people to a ressie would be tough, but what about decreasing the number? Should I call ahead to do so or just wait until we are there and tell them at the check-in podium?

You will not be able to just change the number. They cancel your existing reservation and book you a new one at the lower number. If they don't have anything to book you at, you lose your table.

IMO, it's best to first call and inquire about the availability for your new party size. IF they have it, book it and THEN cancel the larger table. If they don't have it, keep the one you have and continue to call back. If worse comes to worse, tell them at the podium that 2 were not able to come.

I would just keep what you've got. To be honest the tables aren't booked specifically to a certain table so it isn't a big deal if some people can't come. As long as the number hasn't doubled then most things are OK

Sometimes they can adjust the number (party size). It depends what number you're changing from and what number you're changing to. It may be easier to just tell them at the podium "two people aren't coming". As a courtesy to others, I usually try to make the ADR changes but if I'm going to lose my reservation, I'll leave it the way it is.

I would not change the reservations, for 2 reasons:

1. Probably won't be able to get what you already have, or possibly anything at all.

2. People change their minds all of the time. If your inlaws decided they aren't coming now, what's to say that in 3 weeks they'll decided that they are coming?

Leave the ADR's alone. If your inlaws really don't come, just tell the hostess that 2 of your group couldn't make it.
