ROME (Reuters) - Most Italians think nude sunbathing is perfectly natural and don't mind crossing paths with bottomless beach-goers -- even when those bottoms are unsightly, survey results released Sunday said.

While topless sunbathing is widely practiced in Italy, bottoms are usually required and nudists can face fines of more than 500 euros ($595) on some beaches, the Italian Naturalist Federation said.

But the federation said a poll it commissioned from a mainstream media outlet found nearly 70 percent of those surveyed said they would sunbath nude if everyone else did it. More than 80 percent said nudism was not erotic, but natural.

Women were more frequently bothered by nude sunbathing than men. Just over 40 percent of women said they did not like seeing other naked females on the beach, while just 5 percent of men shared their opinion about nude women.

The survey found nearly two-thirds of men said they weren't bothered by nude male sunbathers.

This is so weird! Just this past Saturday this subject came up at my baby shower as my grandfather was recounting to others nearby the experience my family had in Italy in 1981 with topless sunbathers on our trip to Italy when I was 6yo. I vaguely remembered it, too!

My parents, paternal grandparents and I were walking along a sidewalk in Sicily that overlooked a sandy beach. I remember a bunch of commotion between my parents and grandparents, and I seem to remember my mom being mad at my dad. I was able to figure out that she was mad at him because he kept looking down to the beach below. Of course, I had to see what the ruckus was all about, so I looked, too. Tons of topless women lined the beach and I remember wondering aloud why they didn't have their tops on. My grandmother whisked me away as fast as she could, and we all started to head in a different direction!

At my shower, I heard more of the story. My grandfather (he's 88 and doesn't really filter what he says to people who in this case happened to be a pastor and his wife) was saying how he noticed the nude beach and shouted some comment in the direction of the beach to get the women to lift up enough to expose their breasts.

I realize now why there was a commotion, because in addition to my dad straining his neck to look, my grandfather was making these crude comments!

Nude, schmude, who cares. I'm one of the few American women who could care less about men wearing speedos too. I don't care what kind of body anyone has, I look at them all, I'm a people watcher. Watching nude people and speedo wearing men is just all the more interesting to me.

But ... I found this interesting:

This thread reminds me of when we were on holiday in the former Yugoslavia and went walking. Suddenly from the opposite direction, striding through VERY prickly gorse bushes came a rather overweight, hairy gentleman, wearing only a hat and his walking boots and socks. I was struggling with the gorse bushes fully clothed so the mind boggles at how he got on.
