I didn't know there was a state hospital in North Tonawanda.

Gowanda means "Beautiful place among the hills". Go to Wikipedia (I know, Jen hates Wikipedia)...there are some interesting facts about Gowanda - like the original names of "Aldrich Mills" & later, "Lodi".

I don't know about a state hospital - when I lived there it was a "private" hospital named DeGraff Memorial Hospital. Just a little, putzy place...but that's where Al met his DW. She worked there as a dietician assigned to our dad. My dad fell in love with her, and since he was married and too old for Becky, he did the next best thing.... arranged a meeting between her & his son. The rest is history - 3 kids & 4 grandchildren later.

Anyhow - DeGraff might have been acquired by the state. I left the area in '73, so Al could chime in on this.

Cohoes HS here, it means,,,,Mohawk,,,,, Ga-ha-oose" for "place of the falling canoe". There is a very large falls there. My mom grew up right across the street from them.

Is Cohoes Falls on the Mohawk or Hudson? Isn't that the area where there are (or perhaps were) a lot of textile mills?

They used to make Arrow shirts in Troy, NY. And Wooltex used to have a factory in Troy, too.
Hey Denise, somewhere in the Hudson valley is a park with some really big cliffs. It is on the same geologic fault that Niagara Falls is on, but the only difference is - no water. Do you know the name of this park? I can't for the life of me remember it.

Deb, It is the Mohawk River, there was actually one large mill it was called Barclay Home Products, they were one of the largest bed linen manufacturers. They closed around 25 years ago or so. My moms whole family worked there, it was within walking distance from their neighborhood.


Jim, I'm not sure which park it is, I do remember a very popular scenic park in North Troy I use to hear alot about.

DeGraf is still there - part of Kalieda. I had my knee replaced there. I think Jim was kidiing you about state hospitals because there is a state hospital in Gowanda (fka Insane Asylum) as well as a correctional facility. I think the hospital is closed now.

Jim, I'm not sure which park it is, I do remember a very popular scenic park in North Troy I use to hear alot about.

Troy is the home of the 42ID (M), my old unit and Jim's sons current one. We drive through that whole area on the way to our daughters. There are a lot of old closed plants along the way as well as a closed Air Base where our daughter worked for a few months - VA clinic - further to the west in Griffith AFB in Rome, NY.
