Now that Thanksgiving is over, what's on the Christmas menu?

We usually have a ham, mashed potatoes, corn, rolls, gravy and a bunch of yummy desserts. But this year, I'm thinking maybe a prime rib? Has anyone ever made one of those?

What do I ask for at the butcher? What size should I get for say 10-12 people? What else do you make with yours?

Please share your menu!!!

Whatever the chef cooks up on the Disney Wonder!!! :cool1:

(Normally it would be fairly close to Thanksgiving with Turkey, ham, etc etc - all the traditional stuff.)

I usually do Prime Rib. Are all the people adults or kids? I usually get a pound/person because we use the leftovers but if you aren't planning on leftovers go with 1/2 pound/person. If there are a lot of little kids I count 2 kids as 1 "person" for figuring out how much to get.

Prime Rib- mashed potatoes- tossed salad- homemade rolls- green bean casserole- and assorted pies for dessert.

I so prefer Christmas dinner to Thanksgiving dinner! :thumbsup2

with prime rib we always have real horseradish (and if we are having guests the creamed stuff as well that we don't personaly feel packs enough punch to it). we have au juice available as well.

as for sides, i think of what is popular to have with prime rib at restaurants and try to include it-sauteed mushrooms, sauteed or carmelized onions, some kind of potato, and a veggie (i think fresh greenbeans with some bacon and diced onions is ideal). maybe a couple of different types of salads to choose from (i don't do green salad for a big crowd because i don't want to have to deal with multiple tastes in salad dressings).

now for dessert-i think an awsome follow-up for prime rib is an old style traditional bread pudding (the kind that has a good custardy consistency), with a choice of lightly sweetened whipping cream, a whiskey sauce or both:thumbsup2

We always make prime rib. But then again it is just for the 4 of us. I don't know if I could afford a prime rib for 12 people. It would be expensive.

We do bake potatoes and a veggie. The rest are appetizers.

There would be 7 adults (well technically 6 but my 14yr old eats like an adult LOL) and then 3 kids ages 7, 10, 12) I wouldn't mind having leftovers. So I'm assuming to get 8-9 lbs?

That will probably be enough depending on how much the 3 younger ones like prime rib. When my kids were that age they would have eaten as much as an adult so I would probably have gotten 10 lbs in your case. Then again, we do a lot with left over prime rib so I would rather have way too much-we make leftovers with just the meal fixings and eventually vegetable beef soup.

We are doing a finger food/appetizer buffet.

Meatballs
Little Smokies
Finger sandwiches
Cheese ball with crackers
Fruits and dip
Veggies & dip
chips
etc.
etc.

Oh see, now that's sounds much better. I'm thinking of inviting my parents, brother-SIL-their 3 kids (7, 10 & 11months) to Christmas dinner. I was originally thinking of doing the prime rib (I'm the OP in this thread) and usually do a ham, but this sounds so much easier. Maybe even if I cooked up a ham and sliced it all up for finger sandwiches. I think it's so much easier when there's a buffet. Good idea. Thanks!!! Now to look through my cookbooks to see what I can make. WhooHoo!!!

We are having turkey, but then we haven't had it since October (Canadian Thanksgiving).

Turkey with an herb rub and gravy
Herbed Bread, Cracker and Leek Dressing
Cauliflower with browned butter
Mashed root vegetables
Brussels Sprouts
Mixed garden greens with apples and cider vinaigrette
Cranberry Onion Apricot Confit
Dessert: Orange Bavarian Cream

Christmas Eve I am making Tourtiere with glazed carrots and some kind of green vegetable.

Christmas Eve - Teppan Edo

Christmas Day - lunch at Crystal Palace & dinner at Whispering Canyon :)

Now THAT sounds like a super yummy Christmas Dinner (especially on Xmas day---we LOVE Crystal Palace for breakfast and Whispering Canyon is always so yummy too. Hope you enjoy!!!

We go to my IL's for lunch and it's always dry turkey and super-salty ham :rotfl:....

Then we go to my parents' for dinner. Normallly Mom makes turkey, but she's battling cancer and the chemo is taking a toll... I offered to make dinner this year for them @ their house. I'm thinking roast beef w/ au jus gravy, mashed potatoes, a veggie, etc.... between Thanksgiving and lunch on Christmas day @ IL's... we'll be all turkeyed out... :rotfl:

We have (family total, not DH & I) 7 kids ranging from 12 - 3 months old........we've found that on Christmas it's almost a waste to do a huge meal as the kids are so excited about everything else and the adults feel rushed. This way we can have snacks before present openings and then if anyone wants to continue to snack it's there. Since we all get together on Christmas day it makes it a lot less hectic not trying to prepare a huge meal (think Thanksgiving dinner all over again) in the midst of all the Christmas day hoopla. Last year we all just chipped in and one of us (me) went to the store and bought the party trays, buffalo wings, etc. The day was so much more relaxed.:goodvibes

I will be at my SIL's for the usual turkey and...ya know, the same stuff we had yesterday! What I really look forward to is Christmas Eve at my moms. A big Italian seafood feast!!!
