So most of you have convinced me (and even gotten me excited!) about driving to WDW from Chicago. So much so that now I think we might want to take it a step further. With the ages of our kids and money, we want to maximize our opportunity to have our car as much as we can. So with that said...

Has anyone driven to Destin as a one/two night "mini stop" on their way to/from WDW?

We are thinking of doing that on the way home. Two reasons...it breaks up the trip a bit. Yes, it adds on about 45 min, but we can make that work. our thought was to drive to Destin after WDW for an overnight stay, but actually staying for 2 nights, and leaving at 4am the 2nd stay/nt. to go home. Our kids have never seen the ocean, and I know our 5year old would have a blast. We thought it might be a nice relaxing day of playing by the beach for a day on our way home.

Are we crazy - AGAIN!?!?! Anyone done this? Recommend it? We want to try to stick with the route, so we had to pick somewhere that's "somewhat" along the way. If we do anything along the east coast of Fla (Cocoa Beach, Daytona, etc.) or south, it's out of our way and kind of defeats the purpose if it adds hours on the way home.

I was in Destin years ago, when I was 10, so I don't remember much, but I have heard it's nice. Just wanted to get some opinions on our plan...and see if you all think we are adding too much to our crazyness! :goodvibes

It sounds like a great idea. Especially if your kids have never seen the ocean. I would do it. :thumbsup2

I think it's a great idea! We always stop and spend the night somewhere along the way home (we're in St. Louis) anyway. This year we're making an extra stop at the Atlanta zoo on the way home - it adds an extra night to the trip but it's giving us something to look forward to on the trip home.

Have a great time!

If you do that you could take 331 out of Destin to Montgomery AL, and catch I-65 which would take you straight to Chicago. Destin is one of the prettiest beaches on the panhandle and you cant go wrong.
