Finally am going to Notre Dame!!! Yippee! Now I need to find a cheap hotel to stay for the football game. Anyone have any ideas of someplace cheap and fairly close by?

I live nearby. I would go in this area:

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&u...=4&ved=0CD0QtgMwAw&iwloc=14303451820239828676

Hopefully that will work. If not, google University Dr., Granger, hotels. This should bring them up.

You might not hear about it, but do not leave anything in your car. This is prime time for thieves to hit cars and there were quite a few articles in the paper about it last year. Only one home game so far, nothing in the paper yet but that just means it wasn't reported (IMO).

The farther out you stay from the university, the cheaper the hotels should be. My mother used to come out for games and they would stay in Elkhart (20 min max drive on the toll road).

I don't have any advice for you, just wanted to say that I'm jealous... :)

DH went to ND, and we keep trying to get to another game, but something comes up that prevents us from going. We did go once for a game, and stayed at a B&B next to the Studabaker house/restaurant. It was really nice!

We've also stayed in a hotel near the hospital for a friend's wedding - but I don't know the name of it.

I think you are talking about the Marriott. That is north/northwest of the stadium

The B&B, the Oliver possibly?

I suggested the ones on University because they are newer and very near all the restaurants. Iit's easy to get onto SR23 and go directly to the university. Did you all get a parking pass?

Thank you :) My sister said to stay at the microtel in Elkhart. Just wanted to make sure I got it right lol

I don't often venture to Elkhart. I just googled the Microtel, that is in Roseland. That is north of South Bend but I think it's part of South Bend if that makes sense. If I am thinking of the right one, it's right off of the toll road, just down the road from the University and right next to St. Mary's. Never stayed there. There should be fast food along that stretch and a few restaurants (Denny's comes to mind).

*edit. There is one in Elkhart too. Don't know why it didn't show up.

It will be tough to find budget rates on a football weekend. You will have much better luck going further out (Elkhart, LaPorte, etc) if you need to stay inexpensive.

I had a work trip in South Bend that was between two football weekends and I had to submit special paperwork to the state so that they would pay the crazy high hotel rate for my nights.

Hotels close to the university will be very expensive (usually require a two night min. and for football weekends can start at $250/night) if you are lucky to find one. Hotels start booking the first Monday in January for the upcoming season.

We had friends find a hotel about a hour from ND and that's where they stayed this past weekend. We live in Chicago and drive up early in the morning, grab dinner at Rocco's (great pizza not far from campus), and then drive home. It's a long day, but so much fun!

I'd agree that you won't find much cheap in SB on a football weekend.

You might also try Michigan City, it's about 30 mins or so west of SB and an easy drive to make.

There is nothing cheap in South Bend during a football weekend and almost all require a 2 night stay.

We are going out this weekend for the Michigan game and staying at the Hilton Garden Inn in Elkhart (Saturday night only, driving out in the AM) and that was $180.

We are also going out for the Pitt game and Tulsa and staying in Elkhart as the prices are better there. We occassionally stay in Mishawaka at the Super 8, but it is starting to get run down. There is a Holiday Inn Express in Mishawaka that is good. Mishawaka also requires a 2 night stay for football weekends.

We are coming from Pittsburgh, so we tend to stay on the Eastern side of South Bend as it is easier when we leave on Sunday mornings.

There is one other option, I forgot about it. There is a site called rent like a champion. People rent out their homes for weekends. There are some smaller ones but there are also larger ones. That would come in handy if you had a large group of people going.

I am currently working in Elkhart and have been staying at Staybridge Suites. OMG, it is sooo nice!!!

It has a kitchen so you could cook and save some money!!

HI,

Live in Elkhart, about 20-30 minutes from campus. You will find better rates there. There are alot of hotels directly off toll road, exit 72.

You could also try holiday inn on SR 19, and take 20 bypass around to Notre Dame. This may have cheaper rate since it's not a direct shot but still a 65 mph divided road and not a bad drive.

I do both for work since I work out near campus but live in Elkhart.

Enjoy the game!

On a side note, wow. . . who'd have thunk we have so many Elkhart/ South Bend Disers. Always, see the Chicago and Indy get togethers. Maybe we should have a Michiana one at Houlihan's or Culvers and get our Disney on!!! Always need more tips.

just like everyone has said, football weekends, parent weekend, move in weekend and graduation weekend all require 2 night stays, with jacked up rates. it's ridiculus, but people pay it.
we'll be there saturday tailgating!

Just a thought.........if you have any Marriott points or other hotel rewards programs this is an excellent time to use them. We are staying at the Residence Inn in October on points. I was even able to get into the Fairfield Inn (brand new and across the street from ND!!) for graduation on points! It is going for close to $1000 for the two nights! A needed relief after paying that outrageous tuition!

Any tips things we MUST do while we are there? I mean other than the game of course lol

if you have boys, go see the practice field-it's unbelievable. my 2 take a football and play catch with DH for a while. walk around and take it all in. last week while tailgating, we met Dick Vitale. if your coming Friday, go to the pep rally. have fun, we'll be there also!

In the completely random world that is DisBoards, lol, my daughter and I stayed at this Microtel on our cross country trip this summer.

We both really liked it. The room was fairly small, and it was decorated all in orange, lol. (In an Euro-sort of way, pumpkin colored.) But it was very clean, people were very friendly. They advertise a continental breakfast, but it included eggs and bacon and make your own waffles, alot more than just a roll and coffee.

There was also a Perkins restaurant across the street.

1.5 hours before kick-off the band plays at Bond Hall which is on the western side of campus. Immediately following in the same spot is the drum circle (my personal favorite), or you can walk to the Dome and go inside to hear the trumpets play on the upper balconies.

Stop by the grotto and light a candle.

Following the drum circle, head over by gate E to get a spot to watch the band march through campus. I say gate E because that is where we have always been able to find a spot.

If you want to head to the bookstore go first thing because the crowds will only get larger, even after the game. However, there is a newer, smaller bookstore just South of Camput across the street from Angela St. It wasn't that crowded last weekend, but it is quite a hike!

Enjoy the game!
