Im so ticked. Ive had knee pain for a few months now. Finally went to the doc, got a MRI and they tell me nothing wrong! If nothing is wrong then why am I in pain so bad that Im taking advil every 4 hours? Why is it that it hurts so bad that I cant sleep without a brace on? Sorry just frustrated with this and sick of suffering. Its so bad that I cant kneel and cant run (it hurts too much). Its beginging to affect my job too GRR. Thanks for letting me vent.

Had this problem too- couldn't put much pressure on it, it would buckle at times while walking, lots of pain, couldn't kneel down, couldn't work out, etc. yep , lived on advil too.

MRI showed nothing really.
WEnt to an orthopaedic surgeon and he said that he thought it was probably an inflammation in there that he couldn't necessarily see, so he gave me a cortisone shot. In two days the pain was gone.

That was a year and a half ago and dummy me, I think I've reinjured it somehow and probably need to have it looked at again.

See if your Dr could give you a shot. It helped mine out tremendously.

I know this seems extreme, but I would get a second opinion. I had knee pain for years. It was so bad I would literally crawl up the stairs at night. I would go to the doctor, he would take xrays and tell me it was a little arthritis. This went on for years. Finally one day I saw the nurse practitioner instead of the doctor and she sent me to an orthopedic surgeon who asked me why I had waited so long. If I had come in early there was more they could have done for me, but because I had waited so long I was pretty much out of options. I wanted to scream I had been going to the doctor all the time but he blew me off!!!!

My orthopedic surgeon was great and I now have new knees!! I am not suggesting that you have arthritis, only that you need to see another doctor if you feel the first one isn't taking you serious.

Taking Advil every 4 hoursis not good, so you need to figure otu what's wrong so you don't have to do that. Advil can cause liver damage, high blood pressure and GI bleeding if you take too much.

Get a second opinion.

 I am going through the same thing only I am not in pain. I just feel like absolute crap all day everyday. They tell me nothing is wrong. Frustrating. Get another opinion.

What kind of shoes do you wear? If you wear mostly flip-flops or slides (backless shoes) they can cause knee pain and nothing will show up on any tests. Try wearing good, supportive shoes, athletic shoes, for a few weeks and see if that helps. Also, get to an orthopedic doctor for a second opinion.

Did your doctor tell you that cortisone shots are not a permanent solution to getting rid of pain? That might be why you are having pain again in your knee, because it's worn off. Sometimes doctors fail to mention that to their patients. I hope you can get your knee pain resolved, and same goes to the OP. OP, I'd get a second opinion if I were you.

I'm seeing a PT for knee problems. Where is your knee cap? Apparently, it is supposed to be in the center of the leg. However, mine are a little off to the sides of my legs, so I need to do exercises to change the way my legs are turning, I've had problems for years, but last week, after a series of lunges and squats (which I have now been told to NEVER to again), my knee cap "popped," and I couldn't walk for a while.

I just wanted to second this. My dh had a slipped disc in his neck and tood Advil like it was candy. He eventually ended up with GI bleeding because of it (I'm not sure if it also causes liver damage, I know Tylenol is bad for that). So, you really need to try and figure ot what is wrong. Oh, and make sure, if you are taking Advil you take it with food. We learned the hard way you should never take it on an empty stomach.

(I'm not sure if it also causes liver damage, I know Tylenol is bad for that).

Ibuprofen as well as acetominophen can both cause liver toxicity. especially if taken inappropriately.
Ibuprofen is metabolized primarily thru the kidneys but some thru the liver so yes the liver can be affected
acetominophen is met primarily thru the liver.

taking ibuprofen every 4 hours is not good. the dosage is every 6 hours and depending on how many tabs you are taking every 4 hours you may be exceeding the max daily doseage.

Every bottle of ibuprofen we have says 4-6 hours, wouldn't you think that if it was so bad to take it every 4 hours they would change that given all the lawsuits out there?

What kind of shoes do you wear?
Expensive running shoes. Expensive walking shoes... Its never flip flops or sandles, I know better

Where is your knee cap?
Totally gonna check with the doc on this since my grandma had the shifting knee cap problem and by 30 her knee cap was on the side of her knee.

I dont know if theres anyone else covered in our plan. I havent seen a specilist yet. I have seem my regular doctor, and the mri lady so far. I want to see our towns knee guy, but so far no go. I think im gonna ask for a referal.

Prescription strength ibuprofen is double what's listed on the bottle to take
(800 mg.).

Read the entire label. It should say 1 tab can be taken every 4-6 hours. and not to exceed 6 tabs in a day.

1200 mg max a day is standard for OTC use, but if being treated by a health care provider that knows you and your history, the max can be up to 3200 mg per day,
I tell patients every 6 hours to err on the side of caution. ibuprofen has a short half life and the duration for it is usually 4-8 hours.

the Op actually didn't say how many advil she is taking every 4 hours.

One of my co-workers has been complaining of similar issues. When an MRI showed nothing, bloodwork was ordered. She has Lyme's Disease and is now on high strength antibiotics. Might be worth it to have some labs ordered.

I had the same thing, nothing on the MRI but the pain was so intense that I couldn't walk at all.
The Dr did an arthroscopic surgery to see if he could find something since I was in so much pain and the MRI was negative. He found a torn meniscus that didn't show on the MRI. He repaired the tear and I haven't had a bit of pain since.
I would ask if they can do an arthroscopic view or get a 2nd opinion.

Where exactly is your pain?

When I was performing for Disney I started getting pain on the inside of my right knee. I knew it was bad when I was in the pool and went to do the breast stroke. I literally sank to the bottom. The trainer at Disney told me that I had probably torn my cartilage. MRI showed nothing so I just kept performing.

Shortly after returning to Missouri it got worse. I saw an orthopedic surgeon. Apparently there is a condition that is common in women but most doctors have never heard of it. It is called Plica Band Syndrome. According to my surgeon, when babies are in the womb, they have this temporary structure called the Plica Band. Most babies lose it before birth, but in females especially it can remain. Over time, it can become inflamed and it will not show up on traditional imaging techniques.

I had mine removed last summer and have been completely pain free. I did find out during PT that it was exascerbated by the way I stand. I'm a dancer so I put all the weight on the inside of my foot, apparently you are supposed to put the weight on the outside of your foot. You might want to ask about plica band syndrome, and maybe see if you can get a referral to a PT. They may see something in your posture that they can correct and will absolve the pain.

Eeyores Butterfly- I have pain in the inerior side of my left knee. I too am a dancer, and a boxer so I guess I probally dont stand so well.Im planning on talking to the doc again since my grandmothers (mom's ma) started having issues with a shifting knee cap, and ended up having them replaced at 30 and 35. All I know is I need to get my knee problem solved so I can stop taking time off of work to run 2 hrs to the docs the incurance covers.

So far my "to ask about list" includes:
Lyme's Disease (I live in a tick infested area so it wouldnt have been hard to pick one up somewere.
I get alot of headaches already so who knows if its from. I have also had fatuige problems for awile too. But i dont have the charistic rash.)
Plica Band Syndrome (This inflammation is typically caused by the plica being caught on the femur, or pinched between the femur and the patella. This sounds framilar. I get a feeling like somthings caught in my knee, then it releses)
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
Knee cap shift
