Not what it once was

We just returned and I have been thinking about this post during the last few days of our trip.

Our trip was off and on because my mother had a mild heart attack and my illness which has dragged on for the last few months. 5 days before we were to depart.....we finally decided we could go and we were off! It was our annual post-Thanksgiving pilgrimage....we have been dedicated Christmas season disney folks for many years. This year, we setup a plans to try as many new things as possible.

We began with a few days at Coronado Springs. We enjoyed it very much. I had already written my first cast-member letter to thank Patsy who had been wonderful helping us pull the trip together at the last minute. We met her and her manager at checkin. The resort was clean and we enjoyed our time there very much.

WDW wide....bathrooms were in better condition than I had expected....but still not really clean (but not the sewers we have seen in the past) and I never saw an overflowing trashcan thankfully. The parks were....clean.....but not Disney clean. They were like your car after a heavy rain. The car looks clean until you wash it. I took light colored gloves - new before the disney trip. They are filthy and only worn the last few days at WDW......handrails and normal use.

The changes, however, were sadly obvious from the beginning. $$$$ cutbacks. The first night......Wishes.....and later soooooo sadly obvious at Illuminations. Disney has cutback the fireworks and it's obvious. Wishes has lost so many of the big high fireworks launched behind the castle. Illuminations is a shadow of what it once was.

I recorded both shows (and holiday wishes too) ..... my Iphone takes such great video for a little biddy thing. Anyway, it was a sad comparison to the same shows 3 years ago on You Tube. The cutbacks are undeniable. I have all the fireworks shows from a few years ago stored on You Tube on my phone....and watch them when I need a little disney fix.

We moved to the Beach Club after a few days. We love the Beach Club and settled into our waterview room on the top floor....hung the lights on the balcony and checked out the room. A few minor problems which happen with older buildings...plumbing is one of the first things to have chronic problems. None of the handles for the water at the sink were fastened,.....so they spun in the counter when you turned the water on and off, toilet flushing problems (wouldn't STOP flushing) requiring 2 calls and 3 days before fixed. Tub hardly drained and was never fixed until WE bought draino.

We had a FABULOUS maid - who managed to get the other minor problems (burned out lightbulbs, etc.) taken care of.

Our precious little Beach Club is showing signs of wear and tear. The second elevator near the quiet pool just looks awful. It should be shut down...wood sanded and re-varnished. It looks shabby. Would take 24 hours to live up to the standard of a delux resort hotel elevator.

I am in a scooter due to a medical problem and not one valet offered to help my DH load or unload the scooter from our car. Grand Floridian valets were tremendously helpful and Boardwalk - well, I thought we would be knocked over when 3 young men offered to help. At Beach Club, they just stood around talking with each other....and missing out on a generous trip from my DH. We spoke with the valet manager....just transfered from Boardwalk. He said he was embarassed and was trying to work on it.

Oh yes, we came back to the resort one night at 11 pm and there was a sign on the valet station to "check inside for valet services". How much again does the Beach Club charge for a room? We shouldn't have to go in and HUNT for a valet to take our car at any time of the day or night.

Food was a little better than we had expected....but horribly expensive now. We actually began to eat offsite for better food at about 40% less......and overall less SALT than everything we tried inside WDW. I actually sent food back for the first time ever because it was so salty I could not eat it.

The reductions in the Holiday decorations were truly heart-breaking. The Grand Flo and YC are still beautiful and so festive. Beach Club for example......until you get inside, you would not even know it's not......May! EPCOT.....well what can you say without LOW and so much else missing. Nothing on International gateway as they had in the past and so much now missing from all the parks. Now after the skinny Illuminations they don't even have holiday music playing along World Showcase. The first night following Illuminations we just looked at each other....where is the holiday spirit?

They are still doing the holiday post scipt to Illuminations which we love each year.....thankfully.

John O'Hurley did a far better job than he has sometimes done in the past at Candelight. Now I have to admit, my favorite conductor is Dr. Sinclair and he was in command both nights we saw CP (probably our favorite holiday event of the entire season). He drives the show with more enthusiasm and very complimentary to the participants. He always makes me smile! He was WONDERFUL as always.

Now I have a question for the frequent fliers like we are.........why are there so many empty tables in disney restaurants when they are turning away diners? We have narrowed it down to cutbacks in payroll or tables being left empty for people who have reservations and don't show.

Every time we dined in a sitdown Disney restaurant....there were at least 3 or 4 tables which were NEVER filled during our meal. The first was the Plaza at MK....there were 5 tables which never had diners but were turning away people and we actually waited for almost 20 minutes after arriving for our ADR.

Tutu Italia had 4 tables in our section which were never filled. Lets say 4 guests per table at $50 p/psn? That's a pretty big chunk of change that restaurant manager is tossing away every night.

I am a H2O aholic and we had planned to buy a bunch with the extra castmember discounts this time of year. We looked at the tube....they seemed smaller. Sure enough.....now only 7 oz. compared to 8.5 oz a few months ago....but the same price as the larger ones we bought earlier in the year.

Merchandise? Where did the quality go?

So you get a good idea of what we found on this trip. There are many more examples....but these are plenty for examples.

I have said it before......"give 'em less....charge 'em more". It's a shame they try this when thier profit was enormous last quarter (tough NOT from the parks.....attendance was down).

We travel this time of year with other disney friends who have been going for more years than we want to count. It's just not what it once was. I guess this is a reason to NOT scrapbook. We have a few fabulous scrapbooks of holiday trips years ago....when disney cared about things other than how much $$$ they can suck out of each of us. The place is no comparison now.

We say.....let the newbees go who don't know any better because it's disappointing for those of us with good memories.

Sorry to hear about your Disney burnout. I hope you don't refer to hotel housekeepers as "maids" to their faces though, it's really a bit rude. ;)

I did pick up a good tip from your post about the Beach Club not going overboard on the Christmas stuff . . . that makes it sound like our kind of place! The rest of it sounds like the type of problems every hotel (regardless of age) has sporadically, so that doesn't worry me given the many recent reviews I've read of the hotel. Still no fun when you're the one who has to deal with it.

We've been going to DW every year at least once and have sadly noticed the same things. Every year we would lament the latest loss from the old sparkly disney we loved. We go for the nostalgia and being together. Universal is a very nice alternative and the hotels are top notch.

I am sure that was not her intention!;)

I wasn't there so I really don't know, but I'm thinking the empty tables at TS restaurants were because of lack of staff?

While I will agree that some of the maintenance issues hang around a little longer than they should, I put cleanliness in the parks down to how people behave in public. If I go to a park at rope drop, it's clean. But it doesn't take long for people to dirty it up, including handrails. People are too lazy to walk a few feet to a trash can (when they're virtually everywhere) to throw things away. I guess they figure people get paid to do that for them. But what should be an occasional item on the ground, in a planter, or on a table is now trash everywhere. It's apalling!

As to the valets, they are not Disney cast members. That has been outsourced, and the quality has suffered. It can be more difficult to lodge a complaint and actually see a difference. I don't know what their policy is during the overnight hours, but I don't recall seeing valets outdoors when coming back to any of the resorts late at night. I agree that there should be some way to summon one though without having to go in to the lobby and hunt one down.

I also agree that the empty tables are a puzzle. I don't know if it's staffing issues or no shows, but if it's no shows there should be a lot more walk ins being served. I do know that at some of the Disney restaurants, they start out with only some sections open and stagger the arrival time of the servers between those doing pre-opening work and those doing post-closing work. So if you're there at the beginning of a meal period, that could be the reason - that section just isn't open yet. But if it's mid-period then it is very odd, and a big money loser for Disney.

I've been going to WDW since it opened, and there have been a lot of changes, some OK, some not so OK, but there's still enough there for now to keep me coming back.

We go every year, and I have seen lots of changes over the years, some good, some bad. I do agree that bathrooms are a public issue. Some people are just nasty.

I am glad you were able to make the trip finally. I've had to postpone trips before. It stinks! We never had help from the valets with the ecv. We've always just dealt with it ourselves. It is a shame it has changed for those that need help.

didn't a 20+ pager on this topic just drop off the front page this week? yup, that is a sign that it is time to start a new one.

Wow sounds like you had a terrible time! We pretty much go every year since 1999 and have to say I haven't noticed much of what you wrote. The reason is becasue I don't care. I go to Disney to "seperate myself from the rest of the world" (meaning I don't have stress of bills, work, house issues, etc when I am there = stress free). The resort is just a place for me to sleep. If I need help I ask for it. There is so much more stuff to do in Disney then to look for or remember to compare bathrooms and the amount of table open from my last trip. My advise is to stop and look at detail, the smiles on other's faces, watch the for the one kids first reaction to seeing the castle (now I remember mine), and just enjoy rather than nit pick.

I agree 100%. I just went for a week in early November for the Food & Wine Festival, stayed at Pop Century and have to rank that trip as one of the best ever out of my over 50 trips. Like this poster, I didn't constantly look to see what had changed from other trips, I just enjoyed this one. I don't go to Disney World to make sure it's still a clean and pristine place. I go to get away from real life and I honestly can say that I do. On this last trip, I had to be reminded of what day of the week it was simply because I was so lost in everything else I shut out the outside world.

I don't see Disney World through rose-colored glasses, I know there are problems and faults. However, I choose to simply ignore them as I ignore problems and faults in my own life and those in the lives of people I love. No one is perfect and if you constantly compare things to a perfect world, you will be disappointed.

Sorry you had some poor experiences. I did think that the fireworks seemes a little less exciting and you now confirmed it.

Agreed. :thumbsup2

We've been going to WDW regularly since 2001 and I can honestly say I don't notice any of these changes. I don't doubt that they exist and impact some people's trips, evidenced by the numerous posts on the topic. But I have never noticed anything declining that impacted my enjoyment of WDW. I think the trips are what you make them. People that feel so disappointed are probably best off to take an extended break or quit going altogether - because chances are it will not get any better in your eyes.

edited: LOL - I didn't realize a few other posters above had said almost the same as me.

I think it's much easier to notice things that are wrong or that don't live up to expectations when things in uour real life are also going wrong. I'm so sorry that your mother and you have had to deal with devastating illnesses. I wonder if perhaps you were expecting the "magic" to do more that it ever could?

That being said, yes, there have been reductions at Disney World. Those reductions have occurred all over as well, though - we noticed it in Italy and in Vermont on recent trips. Just as airlines have reduced flights so that now all flights are still full. No one is immune to the effects of the recession.

I hope 2011 is a better year for you.

So how did you like the new lights on the castle? On television they look like an absolute fantasy come true. I wonder why Disney put them up if they are trying so hard to cut back?

We are Floridians who used to go a lot. Unfortunately for family health reasons we had to cancel yet another trip. Maybe next year we can finally be disappointed about how far downhill Disney has come...

I also just arrived back and was at the same Candlelight Proc as the OP. I LOVE Disney, and I am going back in one month...and I enjoy all of my trips!!! That being said...I do think some things have slipped a bit in quality at WDW. I completely understand the economy and its effects on Disney. I do think that the Holiday decorations and fireworks ( etc ) are noticably much less than the past. I enjoyed every minute but did see the changes and it was a LITTLE disappointing. Disney has ALWAYS been known for outstanding service and quality. I think they are still very good but not quite as good as they have been at other times. Im sure this will all improve again...I just think that some ( including the original OP ) may be concerned that this is a worrisome sign of what the future may bring. I am very excited for my January trip and will take time to enjoy all of the good that WDW has to offer!! :)

Moved your thread here to our Trip Reports Board where it is a better fit.Your post was well written and made some good points, it just has more to do with Trip Report than Trip Planning. :goodvibes:goodvibes Danny

I'm happy you can spend your travel dollar and not care. Caring is precisely our problem with this last trip. We remember what disney used to be before it was all about money.

We care - that's why these changes were so tough to swallow. After all....at the prices they charge one should expect that level of service and maintenance of say....one of the Universal hotels!

True, the guests' behavior is at times shocking.....profanity shouted during family meltdowns....but that has nothing to do with the parks being not truly clean. It has everything to do with continuing staff and budget cuts.

We care that we get the best value for our hard earned vacation dollar. We skipped WDW last year for DL with our Disney friends during this same week and had a GREAT time. DL was sparkling, castmembers were wonderful.....cheep food was still disappointing....but overal we felt we received great value.

This year at WDW.....with all our castmember discounts, we still feel Disney fell way short.....especially in EPCOT. I said each night.....I'm sure glad we didn't pay anything for these tickets........or........the food was ok as long as we didn't have to pay full price and finally.........the gift shopping with castmember discounts brought the prices down to where they SHOULD be priced for retail guests (50% this year).

DL is so far superior to WDW this time of year....next year is a no-brainer for us. The great news.....Grand Californian is one of Disney's BEST - even with all the staff cutbacks and $$$ cuts.

When we stop caring about our travel experiences is when we stop traveling.

DL has its own issues. We were there a couple of days this summer and knew going into it that they had oversold their annual passes. We just were unable to adjust our schedules to avoid being there when the passes weren't blocked. What a VASTLY different experience it was compared to our last visit there in 07 at the same time of year! I thought I was overcompensating be heading for the castle a full 2 HOURS before the fireworks and barely found a spot. People put out blankets HOURS in advance for Fantasmic. It was wall to wall people, which greatly affected our entire experience.
