I know that there is a cake decorating thread on the community board, but was just wondering if there were such a thread on this board or on the cooking board. I just got finished with a cake that I am really pleased with and thought I would share. I am still a beginner and am looking for other beginners to share ideas/stories/sob stories of "caketastrophes" with.

The golfer is about 5 inches tall and the blue house is a 3D replica of our agency logo. The pine trees are covered in panko bread crumbs and the other trees in corn flakes died autumnal colors. I made the cake for a fund raising golf tournament that we had yesterday.

Great Job!!!

What about at the Designer's thread forum? :confused3 Maybe there are some Cake designers over there..

I'd say you were perfectly at home here on the A&C forum!!!! Heck - I decided to revive a Soap Makers thread from last year!

I have a few cakes of my own to share. This one is the mermaid I did for my daughter's 3rd birthday in May.

OP, your cake came out beautifully and very inventive. :thumbsup2

There's no reason why you can't post to the Cake decorating thread on the CB. The gals there are really sweet. They don't bite - well, only their own cakes. :teeth: Many of them are not professional cake decorators. They welcome newbies & beginners and you show you have quite some experience with fondant already. :thumbsup2 You'd be able to learn many new tricks & tips from the more advanced cake decorators on that thread. :teacher:

Imzadi,

I am already a member of that thread! I thought I'd post over here to see if there were any other "cakers".

Nancy,

Your mermaid cake is fantastic!!!! What did you use to get the hair made. I want to learn all these little tricks and techniques.

If you have other pics....let's see them. I will also see if I can dig up some more of mine.

Linda

I think I saw a cake thread on the Cooking thread, would you like me to move this over there?:)

Here are a few more of mine.....the first two are birthday cakes and the second two are wedding cakes. These were actually the first 4 cakes I ever did!

Thanks so much! I didn't want to say it, but this is actually my second fondant cake. I guess I have a propensity for it! My first one - not so great, I'll show you pics later.... ;)

I used buttercream and the Wilton grass/hair tube. I also used the fondant tools - the scallop, to push the design in to make the scales on a rectangular strip and then cut them apart and trimmed them to be shells. I also rolled little bits for the pearls.

I have also discovered a passion for luster dust!!!! A little vodka to wet the brush and spread it around and voila - shiny scales!

I feel the same way about fondant. I like it so much better than buttercream. I also love luster dust!! I learned the vodka technique from watching Ace of Cakes, believe it or not.

Right now I am in the midst of creating my very first competition gingerbread house, for the National Gingerbread Competition at the Grove Park Inn here in Asheville. I am SO excited. I am going to work on a few fondant figures for the piece tomorrow. I am making a riverboat, a replica of the Riverboat attraction at WDW.

I promise to post pictures as it begins to come together.

Best of luck!!!!! I love watching those things. Just caught the Haunted Gingerbread on Food Network.

I am also an Ace of Cakes fan. One of the Blogs I RSS is www.cakejournal.com. She is from Denmark and does a lot of fondant work. I used her marshmallow fondant recipe for the mermaid and loved it! I am so hooked on making my own fondant now (not that I've done much recently...). The taste is 100% better. She has some cool demos and some of the other blogs she links to are just fun.

I actually like keeping this thread on the A&S board. It's quieter than the community board. Besides, if folks find us here, then they already know they can link to the bigger thread on the CB.

I have also discovered homemade marshmallow fondant and will never go back to commercially made fondant. I had to convince my friends to try it after they swore they would never eat fondant again after the wedding cakes I made using Wilton.

I do find though that the Wilton stuff is much better for making free standing figures. It hardens quicker and I need to add less gumpaste.

Today I am making the final pattern for my gingerbread structure. I have also finally decided on a gingerbread recipe. Tastes yuccy, but holds up to construction REALLY well.
