Not So Urgent Care

We just made it back from our Disney trip-two days late. Our two year old went from a stuffy nose to a cough to wheezing and trouble breathing within a matter of hours. It happened on our last night, and my husband asked at the front desk where we could take her. They recommended the Centra Care Florida Hospital Urgent Care Center. A family member travelling with us is a pediatric nurse, and she said that the baby was in serious need of immediate attention. The "urgent care" place didn't treat her :confused3 . They had us prepay $50, fill out several forms, and wait to be seen. A nurse listened to her chest, and I saw the doctor for a total of one minute. He said to take her to the ER down the road. I found out from the ER that the center had the capability to give my daughter a breathing treatment to ease her symptoms, but they did not. They didn't even tell us to hurry to the ER (not that we were going to take our time). She ended up being admitted overnight.

Be warned-don't bother going to that facility if you or your child needs actual medical help. The Celebration Hospital ER is only about five minutes from Disney World. You should know that they don't have a pediatric unit though. My daughter and I had to ride in an ambulance to transfer her to the Children's Hospital in downtown Orlando.

I hope your daughter is okay now. How scary to have an emergency like and be a way from home where you aren't familar with the facilites.
We brought my DD2 to Celebration Hospital while we were there in May. We thought for sure she had strep throat or an ear infection. She had been under the weather for 2 days and finally it got so we couldn't keep her fever down any longer. Well, to make a long story short, 2 hours later..... they told us that she may have and ear infection (they weren't positive) and prescribed a antibotic for her. In an emergency situation they may be more responsive, but otherwise bring a book... it'll maybe a while.

I'm so sorry about your daughter! I hope she's feeling better!

Unfortunately, most "urgent care" centers are like that. They don't have the same equipment as a hospital and just simply aren't able to treat major issues. Most of the time, the one I've gone to will tell you up front if they can treat you or not. I've seen a lot of people turned away and sent to the hospital. I'll only ever go to one if I come down with a UTI right before we are going out of town and can't get in to see my regular doctor, which seems to happen each and every time we're about to head out of town LOL

We did the same thing with my DD2 last December. She was vomitting stomach bile and a call back to our ped told us to get her medical care before she became dehydrated. Not knowing what to do we went to the urgent care which was more of a walk-in. We ended up at Celbrations Hospital for the night.

There are many reasons why I bring a car seat with us on vacation and this is one of them. If you take Magical Express and don't have a car and it is midnight, what are you going to do except call for an Ambulance.

I hope your daughter is okay. I am sure all of that made a scary situation even worse.:grouphug:

Two of my kids have asthma (as do I). I swear I almost have a nervous breakdown every time one of my kids have an asthma attack. I can't imagine if it happened on vacation.

Did they say your daughter had the croup? My son gets it all the time. It seems like a stuufy nose and cold but at night he can't breath. It is really scary. We have been to the er several times for breathing treatments. it really helps my son if we stand outside (on cold nights of course, hot nights won't help). but the cold air helps him breath and the wheezing stops. If it is summer and he gets the croup we stand in front of the freezer. After he is breathing ok we go back to sleep but in a sitting up position. I will hold him upright all night to help him breath. Just some tips from one mom to another. I know i get scared everytime and he has been getting the croup for 3yrs. good luck!!

Last month our 2 year old was pulling & trying to get away from us in line when he injured his arm. We thought he might have pulled his elbow out of joint. Disney recommended Centra Care & called for free transportation for us. The CC van had a car seat.

We had to pay out of pocket for our expenses at Centra Care, which totalled $450. They attempted to put his elbow back in 3 times, and on the 3rd time they claimed to have it. I didn't feel like they did. He still refused to use his arm & cried if I touched it. They said it was just sore & that he was all set.

After a long & awful night we took a cab to Celebration Hospital where he was treated at the ER. They popped it back in & there was instant improvement in his mobility. Then they wrapped it & put it in a sling.

What I learned...
1. Skip Centra Care- they do not accept a wide range of insurance carriers.

2. Get the trip insurance. In addition to Centra Care, we paid for the cab to & from the hospital & a $100 co-pay for an ER visit. I have since heard that trip insurance would have covered these costs.

OP- I hope that your DD is feeling better & I'm sorry that you had to go through all of that.
