Not Disney = not big news?

Local crowd at Kings Island, vs. international crowd at WDW.

It made the news here in Detroit and it was on Matt Drudge's show last night, too

There was a little boy that fell to his death from the top of a ferris wheel in Texas, a few weeks ago. I think it was but a blip on even the local news.

My prayers go out to the ones in Ohio. :sad2:

Did I read it incorrectly, or did people only have non-life-threatening injuries (i.e., no deaths)? The lack of deaths is probably a big factor in the spread of coverage.

It was covered in Ohio. I'm sure that Disney has millions more guests than King's Island does....hence the lack of national coverage.

Yep, exactly! And, I'm sure there won't be any lawsuits since Kings Island certainly doesn't generate the $$ that Disney does.

To be fair, beyond the scale difference between KI and WDW, the incident was minor in comparison to those that usually make national news.

Playing the devil's advocate-

In Disney, we're hearing about the deaths usually due to a pre-existing, although usually undiagnosed, medical condition after riding.
With this one, we're hearing about "minor head, neck, and chest injuries" per the headline.

I am sure that if there had been even a single fatality, it would have been all over the national headlines. I did hear something about this on DC radio this morning though.

Regardless, how unfortunate. I hoep everyone recovers quickly and that they sort out what's going on with the ride.

I could have been one of those people. I was in Maineville (in KI's backyard), visiting my MIL with my wife and kids, and we almost went to KI for the day this occurred, and I've been wanting to try Son of Beast. Oh well. I'm glad no one was killed, and I hope they're all healed up soon.

It seems like this ride is closed down a ton lately. I guess we can see why.

Wouldn't the fact that it's on MSNBC make it a national story? I'm not following the OP's thoughtframe on this one?

We heard about it here, but being in Ohio, that's not a big surprise. But it sounds like it made most national news, so I'd say that's a "big deal"?

In researching theme park incidents post the latest Disney pre-existing condition death..I found that at a LOCAL theme park in Orlando---that a boy had hurt himself on a ride at Cypress Gardens. I hadn't heard about it UNTIL i searched incidents. I usually pay attention to local radio and the news--I didn't even see a blip regarding when that boy was injured.

So yes--if it is DISNEY--it gets covered (they covered teh little boy at EPCOT who climbed out of the vehicle on Spaceship Earth)---but very little attention to other incidents unless death results. (Though the only place I heard about the Ferris Wheel death of the 6yo boy was here and not on national news--but I may not have been watching at that time).

Regardless the extent of the injuries--injuring 27 people for a ride that malfunctioned isn't a "minor" incident. There was another incident a few weeks ago where a coaster derailed--but I don't recall the park or the extent of injuries--but it was but a blip on the radar...enough to show a pic of the derailed coaster and a casual mention of the injuries and that was it.

Death at Disney = Sensationalized news regardless of the cause of death.

I don't know. I haven't seen it--but we just today got cable. :teeth:

Perhaps OP is referencing "breaking news" type stories or extent of coverage. :confused3

Well someone has to be the first to post. ;)

I remember someone posting about why the DIS wasn't up in arms over a ball player that had beat his wife (or GF)---turns out the common reply was--"Hadn't heard that yet".

You're on a Disney board. ANY Disney news is going to show up here as soon as it lands on any news source, good or bad.

News of the little boy who fell from the ferris wheel was all over the place. Definitely international.
