Not appreciating Disney Parks.

Over time I have found many, many beautiful and fun photos of the Disney parks and resorts. I use some of them as a background on my computers here at work.
I have had one picture from the Flame Tree BBQ’s terraces at the Animal Kingdom that is just beautiful. One person, who is well traveled, saw it and came over saying how beautiful it was and that he thought he might have been there. “Where is that?” he asked. I said “I don’t think you have been there it’s at Walt Disney World.” In this voice that sounded a very let down and a bit smug he just said “Oh.” and walked away.
A few days later I had put up a nice photo of the new Tomorrowland at WDW’s Magic Kingdom. One of the younger guys came by and said, enthusiastically “Wow. That’s neat. Where is that?” I answered. “That’s at Walt Disney World” In that same disappointed voice as the previous person he just said “Oh. Okay.” And left.
Why is it that Disney parks are so looked down upon? Is beauty not beauty no matter where it is? Just because I didn’t travel half way around the world and trek through a jungle to see some exotic terrace doesn’t mean the Flame Tree BBQ is not beautiful. I don’t know what the person who saw Tomorrowland was expecting me to tell them. I just have to keep reminding myself that they don’t know what they are missing!

Same here! I currently have a view of Crescent Lake with the lighthouse at YC in the foreground. People are always asking where that beautiful place is. When I tell them WDW they just sort of look at me weird. Too bad.....leaves a room open for my next trip! LOL!

Some people think that if they don't have kids, there's nothing at WDW that could possibly interest them..

This seems to be a hot area of discussion lately... And through all of the few posts that have been up over the last couple of day, including my own, I have come to the realization that some people don't see the world through the same eyes that we do. Some people look at WDW and see an over-crowded, expensive, childern's park; but when we look we see a park bustling with smiling faces, worth every penny of the cost(albeit slightly expensive), and a place to leave it all behind and just have fun!

What's hilarious is when I stumble upon someone who loves Disney as much as I do, and other "non-Disney" people will just look at you like you're crazy!

What's really sad is when you feel like you have to lower your voice or look around to see who's listening when someone actually asks you "where is your family going for vacation" Boy, if they only knew what a can of worms that opens...


For all my years and money that I've spent at Disney, nothing else can compare to the happy memories I've received in return.

Don't flame me, because I love the Disney parks, but I think that some of the saying "Oh" and walking away is because it isn't the "real thing." I mean, if I saw folks' pictures of AKL and thought that they actually WENT to Africa or Asia, I might also say "Oh" once I found out that the picture was taken at AKL. If I saw a picture of a friend in front of a lovely Japanese building and thought she had actually been to Japan, I might be a little disappointed to find out that the picture was taken at Epcot.

I know what you mean about the condescending comments. I have a dear friend who will not even CONSIDER going to WDW, and she has three kids! She thinks, I guess, that Disney is low class or something. We have been on vacation with her family quite a few times... always places her family has picked. We suggested Disney last year, and she gave us a "Thanks but, ewww, no thanks" little brush-off speech. Oh, well! We went by ourselves and had a great time!

I feel sorry for her kids- they will never get to go, and probably grow up to be Disney snobs, too.

If she thinks Disney is low-class convince her to visit WDW and then check-out a Six Flags, or even Universal... Yes, alot of the same people are there, but there is (to me at least) a noticable difference between the WDW crowds and the *other* parks.

In my expereinces,(not always but I'd say typically) the more affluent and more middle-to-upper class crowd gravitate toward Disney World. Especially when you compare it to the alternatives! Not that the others are bad people, but... well I think you know what I mean! Right? lol, I'll stop talking now.

I have no problem with people who don't "get it" when it comes to WDW.

I do have a problem with people who look down on me or belittle me just because I DO get it. HELLOOOOOO! I am an adult, I can make up my own mind where i want to vacation and how I live my life, and if you have a problem with that, keep it to yourself, you snobbish, self-superior, condescending, bigoted jerk!

Oy, I think I need some blood-pressure medicine. Maybe a Tylenol...

Our disney vacations are always the most expensive, however, they are the most magical and memory filled vacations ever!
When my kids are talking about vacations we have gone on,.... they can tell you something bout their trips to dis... other places they barely remember!
PRICELESS memories that will last a lifetime... cant get it anywhere else!

The weird thing is, she will take her kids to Six Flags (near Atlanta) all the time, but won't go to Disney?!? Maybe she thinks it will be like that? Who knows! But she is dead-set against Disney.

She is actually from a 'good' family- money background. They normally vacation at the beach, on one of the expensive Georgia or SC coastal islands. To each his own, I suppose- more room at WDW for me! Maybe I'll get her there some day, and then she'll see what it's really like.

Of the Castle at night on my locker one day, and someone asked me if it was a Postcard.....I said "No I took the Picture while I was there!" They than said "I didn't know it looked like that." It's been said many times, some people get it, others do not. It's all relative, why stay at home and cook a gourmet meal, when you can go out to a restaurant. Why spend $30 on a single bottle of wine, when you can buy a box of zinfandel for $10? Why go to Colorado to ski and freeze, when you could go to Jamaica? One of the few perks of getting older, at least for me, is that I don't give a rats butt what people think of me, or what I do. I never try to convince anyone of the wonder of DW, it's not worth the time and effort. Besides, if I were to convert them, that would be one more person ahead of me in line at Splash Mountain.

I was talking about our upcoming trip to Disney with a co-worker in the copy room one day when another co-worker (my age - 30ish) came in and when I mentioned we had gone on our honeymoon to Disney she said in a very Muffy like snobbish tone "You went to Disney World on your Honeymoon?" I said to her "Oh, I'm sorry is that not allowed?"
I'm sorry but if being a big kid (with responsibilities) is wrong - I don't want to be right!!!
