Not a good week for our cars

What a week!

On Tuesday DH was coming home from an out of town meeting and was about an hour from home when something flew off a semi-truck and smashed into DH's vehicle. :scared: :duck: Thankfully no one was hurt.

The semi was hauling demolished cars and evidently part of one came loose. DH drives a 2004 Honda Pilot... the hood, bumper and front right quarter panel were damaged. DH had a passenger and they were so lucky that the object did not go through the windshield, or that they went off the road going 75 mph.

The insurance guy came over today to look at it. We were telling him we would need to get a rental while it was in the shop being fixed because DH needs it for work and I use mine for the day-care kids taking them to pre-school, he tells us no problem.

Insurance guy leaves and DH and decide to go get lunch before he goes back to work. I follow him in my van so that after lunch he can go to work and I will go run some errands. As I was following him my van suddenly lurches and starts making a horrible noise. I called him and told him what was happening and before I could pull over the noise got worse!

He turns around and comes back, find out it won't start again. We called AAA and they sent out a truck and they took it to be looked at. Few hours later we get a call telling us the engine was shot, something about a cracked intake valve, leaking fluid and now it's a goner :guilty: It was a 99 Windstar with only 98,000 miles.

So we went from being a 2 car family to a damaged 1 car family in a matter of days. We had been planning to trade the van in May, so I guess that is being moved up, except now we have nothing to trade in :sad2:

I am so sorry!!

I kind of feel your pain. GoofyDad had a wreck in my Subaru about 2 weeks ago (SO not his fault). But the shop keeps finding more things wrong with my car. First they said just surface damage, now I have tie rods and supports and all kinds of things being replaced. They told us today that I probably won't get my car for at least 2 more weeks. :guilty:

I hope everything works out...keep your chin up. :grouphug:

Well, we did get some good news. The truck driver did have insurance  When it happened that night there was a question on whether he did or not, but the reporting officer called and gave us the good news. So that won't be coming out of our pocket!

Plus we have found out we will get a little trade-in for the van. The place we plan to buy the new vehicle at will give us $800 and then re-sell it to a salvage company. Which is a good idea, the body is in perfect shape as is the inside, so I hate to see it go to complete waste.

DH is busy cracking jokes though, I'm a van-killer... etc. He also pointed out that his car was damaged by a demolished car and mine will soon be a demolished car.

He had to go out of town today (he rode with a co-worker) and he told me to go start looking for something. We have an idea what we want since we were planning on doing this in 2 months anyways, but haven't really looked too much at it yet.

Bad week for my car, too! Today it hit 200,000 miles, and coincedently I had it looked at for an oil leak, and well - bad news - it needs a new engine!! Cars need engines, right? Not like I can ignore this! :teeth: I was thinking of replacing it in the Fall, but looks like I need to move that up a few months! I am so not ready for this!

SleepyMom - have fun car shopping! Hopefully you will find the right car for your family without too much stress!! :)

Hope all goes well, SleepyMom, what a bummer. And good wishes with the new van. And HugsForEeyore, hope that new engine gives as many miles as that first one, good wishes.
