schools tend to accumulate statistics to show their success level. in NY, for example, we have the "school report card", which gives statistics about each school district and each school within that district -- how the students as a whole did on state standardized tests, the percentage of students going on to college, etc. schools here on Long island also keep statistics on AP exams, such as the percentage of students taking the exams and the percentage achieving a high schore on those exams. so there's an "objective" measure of whether a school is succeeding in providing an education to its students.

what I want to know is -- is there a reliable source for similar statistics for homeschooled children? obviously some succeed, win prizes, get into great colleges, etc. just as obviously, some fail to achieve. anyone know of a source for data on this?

I am not sure, but I think the Department Of Education oversees homeschooled children and their education, too. In Montana, a parent has to register their homeschooled child with the state and they have to pass state tests in order to verify that the child is still getting the education. As far as participating in public school activities, I am not sure. I would start with your local District Superintendant of Schools.

I am not sure about that, but I think there would be.

I will ask my sister tomorrow, she doesn't "home school" but she put her kids in a charter school, and it started off as a teacher homeschooling her kids, but then they expanded into a school, not very large, but totally excellent. Maybe my sister can get some info for you.
