Not A Debate Board Request, But How About A Political Board?

I used to post on the DB but I think I kind of like the political posts mixed in on the CB. While my politics are slightly left of center, I realize that many of the folks I've sparred with on the DB have many of the same values, hopes and dreams that I do. We just have different ideas about the best way to get there.

Neither the far right nor the far left has all the answers about how to make our country, or our world, a better place. I think the answers are all someplace in between, and that conservatives and liberals both have something to offer to get us there.

Seeing CB-type posts from my DB antagonists makes me more inclined to remember that these folks do share many of my values, hopes and dreams and it makes me more willing to consider their points of view when I'm making up my mind about an issue.

The issues of the day are part and parcel of what it means to be a community...like my favorite saying in the line to Splash Mountain..."You can't run away from trouble...ain't no place that far!"

ITA, well said! I especially agree with the bolded part.

ITA, KarenC. Seeing posts from other DB-ers on the CB has been an eye-opening experience for me. While the loss of the DB was tough, it has put many things in perspective. Excellent post!!

Well, then I guess we'll have to "agree to disagree" on this one, because statistics of how many political/current events types posts vs. how many other types of posts don't really change my opinion that the political/current events stuff "drag" the board down.

Rest assured, I don't read many of the political type stuff (unless I'm really cranky and in the mood for a fight;) ), but even the titles(ie-Anoher Person Beheaded) or whatever, can bum one out.

I like to come to the CB for the "lighter" fare in Internet message boards.

Thanks for the responses.

To those of you who gave the sarcastic replies, thanks! So nice to hear from you!

To those of you who agree, thanks for the support of my idea.

Basically, I don't see what the difference is between not having a Debate Board and having the debates come to the CB, but, who am I, I guess????

I figured that since we had boards for Transportation, DVC, Scrapbooking and other specific themes, that politis/current events would work too.

So sorry for posting a thought or suggestion.

I'm not saying your point is not valid. It certainly is.

But the DB has already been eliminated per the powers that be at the DIS. Your idea of a "politics" board is only semantically different from the DB as it existed a couple short weeks ago. Your idea is not much different than simply re-establishing the DB that was. My opinion is that you were trying to find a way to call for the moving of political debates off of the CB over to a new PB. But debates in general have political slants to them. Therefore, they also would be moved over to the PB. At the end, you have the CB as it was, and the DB ostensibly renamed as the PB.

I see your request as nothing more than a backdoor way of trying to get the DB reinstated. And I'm ok with you wanting that. Really, I am! :) I'm sure many DB'ers agree with you as well. But I think the WM's made it perfectly clear that the DB is gone and that no semblance of such would reappear anytime soon.

Personally, I really don't want to get much into all of the PD etc. threads. Partly because of interest, partly because of time. There are A LOT of PD, fluff, prayer, etc. threads. And that's fine. Using the pool analogy...if I want to swim, I can't kick people I don't want to see out of the pool.

The problem with this argument (e.g. that political debates "drag" down and take the fun out of the CB) is that if your real goal is to lighten up the CB you'd have to eliminate more than just debates, but rather all the prayer requests (since they're usually for depressing things) and all the non-political current event news items that aren't uplifting. I can't see that happening.

It wouldn't have to be. You could have a
Liberals Political board
Conservative Political board
and a
I swing different ways on different days political board.

Only those agreeing with a particular political philosophy could participate. You'll get a lot of ITA's but there wouldn't be much fighting.

Think of the possibilities...

This is why Rush Limbaugh is so popular! I'd MUCH rather listen to someone who agrees with me than someone who is going to make me so angry that I run off the road in frustration!

Okay, that was WAY off topic. Sorry!

:hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :jumping1:

Well, Bob, I don't have a problem having a "Prayer Request" board either, a la the Birthday Board.

Again, I'm happy to "agree to disagree" since it's not going to happen.

Maybe it's just me, but skipping over--bypass--not opening a thread I have no interest in would be the logical thing to do:confused:

It really isn't that hard:wave2:

There have always been depressing or controversial threads on the CB. Think of all the threads about whether someone should get the death penalty for a crime. Think about all the threads about what everyone would like to do to child molesters or wife beaters. Think OJ. This place has always had a small percentage of those threads up on page 1 at any given time. They usually deal with current events. Some of the political threads are no different. The point of posting the numbers was to say that it is indeed a very small percentage which sometimes gets bigger based on the news of the day. I believe when I started this thread there were 0 on page 1.

I have no problem with a political or current events board. Then again I had no problem with the concept of the debate board. Some people do not play nicely. That's unfortunate. Some people are trolling for extreme emotional responses. That too is unfortunate. I've seen them on all the DIS boards.

If my posts came off as sarcastic I apoligize. I was attempting, in a humorous way, to make a point.

So the real issue is that you have a lower tolerance for the DB type stuff than some others. That's ok. At least we understand that now. :)
Also, take notice of WHO posts threads with titles like "beheaded". You'll find a scant handful of people that are that purposefully egregious in their titles. And the content of their posts is often just as harsh. Not naming names though...

I sure do hope you aren't painting all of the DB lovers with the same "beheaded" brush. You know that we aren't all like that. I'm not saying that you were saying that, but I could understand how someone else could misconstrue your comments as such.

Lanshark, brilliant post as usual! I kind of feel like people are trolling for emotional responses on the CB. It's hard for me to read about peoples troubles. I was brought up to not whine about misfortune, but to do something about it and move on! I'm not putting anyone down, it's just that some people take a different perspective on life than I do. :D

It's painful and depressing for me to see a lot of personal, emotional stuff.:(

I would love to see a political post only board!:sunny:

Then why not ask for a "Fluff and Pixie Dust Only" board?

All these posts end up becoming is another back and forth of who does what and what about and what ifs.... it sounds so incredibly high school.

I suggested a Political board months ago, before the debate board was closed. Why? Because the closer it gets to November, the rougher it gets. It was a nightmare 4 years ago, and I'm SURE it will be again.

CBers and DBers have been placed in this playground and we HAVE to play nice. If we'd stop taking this stuff so personally, including myself, it COULD be a happier place. Underlying insults help nothing and cause more division.
