I'm trying to convince my sister and her daughter to fly down instead of driving from PA. They are both afraid of flying. When I read that SW airplanes were on the old side they both said they would not even consider flying in an old plane. Are the SEA planes the same? Any northEASTerners that has flown Southeast can tell me what the planes are like? TIA:D

From what I have heard and seen on Southeast air's site the aircraft are DC-9's and are bound to be on the old side. I would think that Southwest's B737's would be newer.

I do know of some people who have flown them before and were happy.

We flew Southeast for our Dec trip and it was wonderful..didn't notice them to be any different from the Delta or Usair planes I've flown in the past 18 months.....But I'm not a airplane expert....how many of ua really know the actual year the plane we are flying in was made....

Air planes are very different then cars as planes as they get an inspection about every 100hours...and depending on the parts they get replaced and overhauled on a certain schedule also...So, the year a plane was made will not have a lot of bearing on judging it from a safety stand point..

Maybe I didn't make myself clear on this subject, I just wanted to know how they look, I wouldn't know (and don't really care) what year they were made, its the appearance of an old plane that scares my sister, like seats that still have ashtrays in them would show the plane's age, and a poster had mentioned that their seat was held together by wire, I would consider that an old plane, LOL! Thanks for the replies. Anyone else have any first hand experience on this airline I would welcome any comments. TIA! :p

The seats did have ashtrays in the plane we flew on and the decor was a little dated. Other than that, there were no significant differences between SE and other airlines and we arrived safely with no delays or technical problems. Tell your sister that just because the planes are older doesn't mean they're so old they're falling apart.

Ditto to what Disney Ella said. We flew SEAL in Jan. with no problems - you can't beat the price! My dad is terrified of flying (he was sick the entire day before their last flight), and he actually liked SEAL better. He said he felt better since the airports were smaller - he liked Allentown, and Sanford much better than Phil. And as Tom Bodett of Motel 6 says "they all look the same with the lights out"::yes:: Drug 'em up, have 'em sleep, they'll never know;) Just kidding, I'm not really that heartless. However, my mom asked my dad's doctor about my dad's "sickness" before flying and he said "there are pills for that" lol. HTH:D
