We have planned to visit the North Shore from Aulani on Sat, Feb 1st. I picked that day because I read that the beach and pools at Aulani get much busier on weekends. Im sure the beaches and other attractions in the North Shore will also be busier. Would you rather deal with a more crowded Aulani or North Shore? Its our first trip to Oahu so we dont know what to expect.

I would love to know the answer to that as well but have always been told to stay away from the North Shore on the weekend especially during the surfing season which February would be. We have always gone in June and it wasn't much of an issue but this year we will be going in March. So personally I would rather deal with a more crowded Aulani.

If a weekend is when you have planned to visit, go for it. As long as you pack your patience, you should be fine. I would suggest leaving early so that you miss as much traffic going as possible. If the surfing competition is going on, it would be neat to see. You can google the schedule to see what beach the competition will be at.

I did the North Shore recently on a Sunday and had a ball. While I didn’t go to the beach, I did go to Haleiwa, Waimea Valley, and peaked at the Banzai Pipeline. I had an 8am tour, so there wasn’t much traffic going because I left Aulani around 6:30am. The closer I got to the North Shore beaches, the more the traffic picked up but it was moving. When I left around 2pm, traffic was bumper to bumper for a while and then cleared out. Think two lane country roads with varying speed limits. Be prepared to park on the side of the road and walk to the beach if the parking lot is full. Have fun!

In Feb., the surf is going to impact traffic conditions more than weekday/weekend. If there’s surf washing over the roads or theres even the possibility that the Eddie is on, you could sit in traffic for hours. Check Google maps and the Star Advertiser website at about 7am before heading out to the North Shore, regardless of the day of the week.
