All talk. They have a pattern for doing this. If they even try to attack anyone, I believe we, and our allies, will wipe them out.

North Korea doesn't have to hit the US for us to get into this. We have quite a build up in Guam and that is easily within the range of a missile attack. The whole thing just makes me sick to my stomach. It's like a giant pissing contest with them right now. They do something so we casually fly over with our stealth planes. They do something else so look we dock a couple navy ships in the area just to hang out. This is not a game of chicken that I want to engage.

I wasn't as worried until I listened to an expert on the radio this am. He had many logical points as to why N Korea is "more unstable" than usual, including the fact that China (which usually has at least some influence) has not had the usual amount of influence on them, and that their newest leader did not have the amount of stability built into his power base that the past two leaders have had. The speaker also pointed out the huge number of Americans in S Korea (I want to say 180K) that are civilians who would be affected if anything were to happen, vs the small amount of American soldiers currently deployed in the area (35K?).

He did state that nukes were not the biggest worry, but that the country was definitely unstable.

What Tina said. You can't have any type of meaningful, productive dialogue with someone that is insane. This guy has a HUGE ego and is very, very dangerous.

Do I think they are a major THREAT? Nah, not really. I think China would be hard pressed to defend them too much considering they are now much more invested in the US (figuratively and literally).

However, who wants to see innocent lives wasted because someone needs an ego boost?

They could do some damage before we blow them back to the dark ages.

China has come out and disproves of NK restarting nuclear program. So i think China would probably side with the other side.

As for being hit by missiles, we have missile crusier interceptors in place already. 2 are parked off south korea to defend any missiles coming out of NK, i doubt it will hit any nations.

Lil' Kim is crazy - and has a need to prove himself, particularly to the military. I think the missiles and manuevering are just for show, however there are two things that concern me. If you listen to the rhetoric they talk about "smaller, lighter" technology and "explosions will happen." I don't think they have a missile that can reach the US, but I wouldn't say they don't have loyal supporters that could sneak a dirty bomb into the US. The other thing that concerns me is that they have shown they are capable of launching a missile that could trigger an EMP attack. That could explain why Austin was on his hit list - a big enough EMP over southern Texas could take out 2/3rds of our refineries as well as crash the power grid.

Long shots both, but more probable than a traditional nuclear missile attack.

What I think is that this is a punk kid, who obviously inherited the crazy genes from Grandpa and Daddy , along with the country, who is using all this bluster and talk to show that he is capable of leading the North Korea.

Will he acutally do anything? I don't think so, but I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss him. After all, these are people who have no problems with starving their own country for decades, and are the most socially isolated and brainwashed nation on earth.

I think South Korea is in a much more precarious situation than us, because of their close proximity.

The most promising thing, so far, is that China seems to be distancing itself from Crazy Kim.

I'm hoping this is all a game for him to puff himself up, then, at the last minute, call it off, so that he appears to be the magnanimous one.

At best, this guy is a megalomaniac and a bully. The best way to avoid a conflict is to display a show of force and pray he is all talk.

Honestly I'm more worried about all the civilians in North Korea than about a threat to the US.

I see a pp where they said, "we'll blow them back to the dark ages". I'm sure PP didn't mean killing civilians and is thinking of a tacticle military strike in retribution... but nevertheless there are many, many scared and powerless people in North Korea that are being oppressed. I for one don't want to have any part in killing them ....

But if North Korea does something that inflicts harm on another nation its not an easy answer.

My comment about innocent lives being lost referred to the North Korean people who may not know anything other than what they have been told by their dictator.

As for blowing them back to the dark ages, I was specifically thinking of their government.

Unfortunately, reality is that it is likely hard to separate the two. But, at the risk of getting flamed, a quick solution is, IMO, much preferred to any long, drawn, out military tit-for-tat that serves no other purpose than to get more and more people killed. Both in country and out.

I know this will offend many, but I do tend to believe that sometimes force is best. 90,000 tons of diplomacy and all that. Sometimes that's the only thing that works.

Kim Jong Un is a wackadoodle... not unlike his father. I actually think he is more nuts, though. He has a serious Napoleon complex with a serious level of delusion and a need to show superiority which, quite frankly, he does not have. I do also wonder if this might be an attempt to get humanitarian aid for their starving by threatening to screw up the world economy.


I'm not concerned. They don't have the technology to reach the US with nukes, I don't think he is stupid enough to try, and if he did, the US can intercept it. Then he'd be at war with a pissed off United States, South Korea, Japan, and likely all of our allies.


All that said, I fully believe they'll never actually attack, because it would be suicide for their regime once their soldiers see the entire line of bullcrap they've been fed about life outside Best Korea first hand.
