North Carolina beaches

Where is the vacation spot in NC? I know about the Outer Banks, but where else could we go for a beach vacation? My mom wants to go to NC for genealogy and we like to sit on the beach, where should I start?

Hi! A North Carolinian here, that grew up at the beach. 1) Where does your Mom need to go to do her research? There are basically 3-4 areas of beaches in NC. There are the northern/OBX beaches - Dare and Hyde counties (Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, Hatteras, Ocracoke, etc.); middle/SOBX beaches - Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle/Cape Hatteras; lower middle - Topsail/North Topsail; southern - Wilmington/Wrightsville/Carolina Beach/Sunset Beach. It all depends. I grew up in the Atlantic Beach area and miss it daily.

We adored Kure Beach. Small Town, State park, Civil war battlefield, small but nicely done aquarium.

The Outer Banks would be closest but still about a 2 hour drive.

If you go in the summer, I would recommend going via 64 to avoid the heavy traffic on 158. Any other time of the year you could go 17/158 or 64 - just depends on where you want to stay at the beach.

Atlantic Beach area would probably be about 2 1/2 hours.

If you could fly like a bird it wouldn't be so bad, just the waterways making it an extra long drive : )

When my kids were small, we went to Oak Island (Long Beach), NC every summer. We had the most amazing family vacations there!
