Norivirus outbreak on Princess Cruise. What is Disney doing to avoid this?

True, but if they refuse to acknowledge & document that someone has it (which happened in mine & a few others cases), then there's nothing to report. They're smart. If they don't take the info, no need to report it.

Exactly.

Pretty sure this is what they did to us

Interesting.. I love Disney but have always been afraid to cruise due to these noro outbreaks. Have also wondered why Disney is the only cruise ship that hasn't showed up on the CDC website for outbreaks in over 15 years... doesn't seem that a ship can be THAT clean.... even Disney...

It is because they give you hand wipes while entering the ship, all dining rooms and the kids must WASH hands before going into the kids rooms.

Plus they are always cleaning everything.

You do see some people try to avoid the wipes or just throw it in the trash. One day they will pay the price. lol

I also bring clorox wipes whenever we travel. Even to hotels... I wipe down the table surfaces, remote, light switches, toilet seat and flush....

Just a question for those that meticulously wipe down hotel rooms and cruise ship cabins with Clorox wipes as I and my family do not understand why or just basic hand washing is not enough?
Is that the only place you do this?
Do you clean the shopping cart handle, and then the steering wheel in your car, do you clean the packaged produce before putting it in your refrigerator, and the canned goods too?
Do you make the kids clean their hands before getting in the car after school or when they get home from the bus before touching stuff in your homes?
What about if they have been at a school friends house? Do you make them wash their hands or use a wipe when they get home?
Do you perceive hotel rooms and cruise ship rooms more dirty and contagious than the grocery store, school, school bus a friends house?
We just wash our hands with soap after using the bathroom, before we eat, and lots if one of us are sick.

These are honest questions. They are not meant to be derogatory or questioning your lifestyle, just questions for someone who is curious!

The reason people wipe hotel rooms is because tons of people visit those hotel rooms, people from all over the country and all over the world, bringing their germs that your immune system may not be used to. Additionally, many people take extra precautions against getting sick while on vacation, because getting sick can really put a damper on a holiday. I'm sure many people take precautions while at home (I for one DO wipe off cart handles before using them), but then again, most people are used to the germs in their general area. Their immune systems have built up immunity to them. Not so when it comes to strange germs from abroad and elsewhere in the country... You know? The biggest thing for me is just that I take extra precautions to not get sick on vacation.

Thank you for your reply!
Do people that have kids that have left home do the same or keep track of if there had been a Noro outbreak at the local elementary schools even though they do not have kids that go there? What about the mom or dad that has sick kids at home, but they handle your groceries either stacking the shelves or at the counter? What about the family that have just returned from europe or africa or the otherside of the country?
My point was meant to be more general, so to expand on that, do you wipe down the seats and armrest and tray tables on a plane, the cart at the airport with your luggage on, after getting on the disney bus, after being in the terminal? Do you step up cleaning before a vacation?
I'm just curious as we have always taken the approach that mild viruses are good to get as it does build up your immune system and prevent more from happening. We clean the counter tops and bathrooms with antibactrial detergents, but not a lot else.

The key to not getting sick is to not come into contact with germs or droplets and then get that substance into your mucous membranes by touching your eyes/nose/mouth. Most infections, except things like TB, do not live in the air for very long, so you won't get them that way unless someone coughs on you or in your face. That's why regular handwashing is necessary. I don't usually see snotty, coughing, sick people stocking groceries so that's not a big concern of mine. I do see snotty, coughing, sick people shopping - which is why I wipe off cart handles and grab groceries from the back of shelves. I do wipe off armrests of planes and the tables because planes give me the heebie jeebies as it is... You're barreling through the sky in an airtight tin can and someone on it is probably sick. Bleh. I just actively don't touch my face in situations where wiping down stuff is far too neurotic.

Just so people don't think there is an active case of Noro on Princess currently, this thread is from April of 2014. Disney has had noro and has reported it. I remember when they actually cancelled a cruise to disinfect the ship. They take great strides to prevent and it only has to be reported when a certain percentage of guests/crew have it. If 10 people onboard have it it does not have to be reported to the CDC. 300 people, then yes, it has to be reported. I do not know the exact percentage so those numbers I posted are just an example.

We were on the Magic a few years ago and my daughter got it. The doctor confirmed it and she was quarantined to the room for 24 hours. It was awful!
