Which do you like better, and why?

Thinking of getting one or the other for DH for Christmas......I'm sure it would get used by other members of the family though too :rolleyes1

I have a Kindle and I love it - I think Amazon is the best in the business in terms of Customer Service and innovation. The only feature a Nook has that a Kindle does not is the compatibility with library books. I don't check books out of the library so I"m not interested in that feature.

Barnes & Noble announced their new NookColor today - essentially a lite version of an iPad. I have no interest in it because it's another LCD screen, not e-ink (and I also have the real thing - an iPad - for the other applications NookColor is supposed to provide) but you might take a look at it if you are interested in a tablet/ereader combination. It's wifi only and will be $249. Pre-order now for November 19th free shipping.

I just got an email from Barnes and Noble and they are taking preorders for their color version of the Nook.

What kind of screen is that? Is it backlit?

eta: should read the responses before I ask questions.

I have a Sony, and I really like it, but I've never had the others, so I can't compare them.

I really like the library feature - I hate paying for books if I can get them for free.

:rotfl:That wouldn't be any fun!

I watched the press conference "live" on Endgadget and they weren't impressed with the screen. It has some sort of "cover" (film screen, I think) to reduce the glare from the backlight - but it's still a backlit screen and not an e-ink one.

Battery life is supposed to be 8 hours with the wifi off. That's not in the ballpark of an e-ink reader, so if battery life is important to you take that into account.

If you want to read in bed with a backlit device, I think it will be a great choice. I read in bed with my iPad and it hurts my eyes after a few minutes, so I mostly don't read in bed anymore. I'm not a big bed-reader anyway, though, so that's not an important feature for me.

I really think this is going to be the defining feature when people make an ereader choice in the near future. All of the ereaders will have basically the same technology and set of basic features, so library use/nonuse and other issues will be the choices that people make when buying one or the other.

If you are like the above poster, you will always want that to be available on your ereader. For me, library use is not a factor. I am willing to pay for the convenience of having any book at any time to read on my own schedule. So other features will be importnat to me, but not the library feature.

Both Kindle and Nook now have (or will soon) the LendMe feature. So they are even there. Again, though, that feature has to be important to you in order for it to help you make a decision. Do you know someone with whom you can lend/borrow? Does the 14 day loan period/lend a book once and once only suit your needs? If so, that will be a plus for both ereaders - if not, you won't care.

my choose is neither..

For $299 you can get archos 101, 10.1" android tablet.. I like a device that can multi-task, media, internet, rss, e-mail, other apps and e-reader apps.. there is a Kindle app android / Apple.. There is also several book readers with access to free content on the internet.. i know that Ibook (apple) also supports PDF's, handy for manuals, etc...

Other than that as others have said its features.. What content you want access to and what device support that content.

Sorry.. forgot to mention..

The glare thing isn't that big of a deal for me.. I use my devices inside 99% of the time.. Even outside there is glare but it can be managed..

I had this at first to, i did find turning the back light almost all the way off helped AL LOT.. but i know each person is different.

For me the backlit feature is a HUGE plus. I do about 90% of my reading in bed and my DH would appreciate not having the lamp on .:thumbsup2. I have read books on my Droid without any issues at all. The back light doesn't seem to bother my eyes at all.

I also like that I can read on a Nook, leave a bookmark, then pick up my Driod and start reading where I left off so if I don't have my Nook with me, I can still read :thumbsup2.

Now, I just need to get a Nook :lmao:. It's on my Christmas list.

I love my nook. I would never upgrade to the color version.

I like having a touch screen instead of a keyobard taking up room on the unit. I like being able to browse books by cover as well as title, and I love being able to share books with my friends who own nooks.

The only frustrating thing, for me, is when I go in B&N and see paper versions of books for sale for $5 and they are still $19 on the nook. IMO, they should have the same price as in the store. With amazon, you only have one price to choose from.

The battery lasts forever. I charge it once or twice a week overnight and that's it.

I am not a techie by any means, but I am in love with my nook and wouldn't trade it for anything.

ETA: I HATE reading on backlit screens. I bought a light for the nook to read in the dark/bed, and it works great.

I would love to know the answer to this question, specifically from the folks who own (at least) one of each. I think people need to own something to be heavily invested enough in it to give it a fair chance, and I also feel that people need to work with both devices to compare the two.

For myself, I have a Kindle, but neither have had it long enough to qualify as a Kindle owner, vis a vis the standard I outlined, nor do I have a Nook, so I can't compare the two.

But if anyone does own (or has owned) both devices, please chime in and clearly identify yourself as a dual-owner. Thanks!

I researched A LOT before deciding on the nook...you can't go wrong with either one but I liked the design of the nook better. I also like the lend me feature on the nook. I am not upgrading to the new one although MH is getting one and he is waiting for the new one. go into stores...check each one out..

We are thinking about getting DD one for Christmas. We are completely clueless on what would be the best one for her. Will keep checking back for more feedback.

Amazon announced this week that the LendMe feature will be available on Kindle as well. Just like the Nook, you will be able to lend one book one time to one person, for a 14 day period.

That's set by the publishers, not Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

I've never understood what this meant. Is it one time only or one time to Joes and one to time Mary etc?

I dont know how old your DD is but you can get library books on the nook..not the kindle...

DD is 16. She is an avid reader and uses the library a lot now. I think we are leaning towards the one with the library option for that reason.
