Has your Nook or Kindle paid for itself yet? I want a nook but am having a hard time justifying the cost. I've already lo0ked up two of my childrens summer reading books and would have already saved $24.00 on those books alone.

If you have a nook or a kindle, are you an avid reader or a just once in awhile reader? I'm somewhere in the middle of those two and am trying to figure out if it is a good investment. Thanks!

I have a nook and love it... if you do a search of these boards I am sure you will find 3 or more threads about the nook/kindle/sony/other debate and how worth it they are.

DD13 and I have Kindles and they have paid for themselves.

DD is an avid reader and she hers has paid for itself about 3 times over since she got it for Christmas. I read less than her, but often enough and mine has paid for itself about once (note--we can also download everything either of us buys onto the other kindle for no extra cost). DD gets many of the free books and also most books she buys and those I buy for bookgroup are less expensive than in paper for.

We live in Germany so getting books in English is a bit pricier than it would be in the US, but even in the US it would have saved us money.

I have a kindle and have definitely paid for it in books. In May I went to WDW and then to China for 2 weeks. Between these 2 trips, I read 22 books so I almost paid for the kindle in just that one month.

I opted not to get an ipad because I already have an iphone and I didn't want the backlighting. Also the kindle fits into my handbag which is perfect for travel.

The Nook/Kindle/Sony/etc. will definitely pay for themselves. I've gotten a ton of free books and a ton of books at a discount but be prepared, every so often there is a best seller that is, in the end, more expensive as a digital edition, because......

You can't sell an e-book and you can sell a hard cover book. I have been wanting the lastest J.R. Ward book. The e-book is $12.99 for the nook, the hard copy is $11.91 at Amazon, and I'm sure when I'm done with it I'll be able to sell it for at least $8 on e-bay.

I have the Nook and I absolutely love it! I got mine in February and so far have put 20 books on it. 5 or so of them were special "free for this week" kind of deals. I don't know if the Kindle does this, but the Nook lets you download free samples of books (they vary in length) to see if you want to purchase the whole thing. Also, if you go to the Barnes & Noble store and connect to their wifi, you can read books for free while you're there. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Get an iPad. It has a Kindle application on it plus you have iBooks.

The library i work for has been testing different reading devices.. The iPad stinks... Because of the light being emitted by the screen it causes eye fatigue.. Plus its overpriced and the battery only last a fraction of the time..

Not to mention, the glare of the screen. You can't use an iPad in full sun, but you can use the nook and kindle in full sun.

I have a nook and I read 3-4 books a week. I got mine not so much for the savings, but more for the reason of I'm running out of places to put books.

I've had it for about 6 weeks and so far, I'm loving it.

I bought my Kindle first, and after DH played with it (after I demonstrated it) I bought one for him about 3 months later!

We love them- he even takes his along when he takes the car to get washed!

He's got 32 books on his- all free, and I have 102 books on mine. I think I've paid a total of $20 for all of them. That works out to about $.20 per book!

I'm sure that you'll make a great choice- but as you can see, we all have our favorites! The price is definitely right though- especially after the latest price war.

Good luck!!!

My iPad battery lasts 10 hours minimum. I adjust my lighting to where it is comfortable to me for reading. Amazon put a Kindle app on the iPad. How much longer do you think they will keep making Kindles? Amazon makes it's money on books not technology.

It's nice to have a device that is far more than just my book reader.

I love my Nook. It's easy to hold and reads/looks just like a book.

I have a coworker that purchased the iPad and he listed it on ebay this week. He said it's too heavy to hold as a book and w/o a keyboard he'd rather use his laptop for that stuff. Don't get me wrong it works for a good bit of people but it's not for everyone.

We already have the Ipad and it is straining on my horrible eyes. I'm pretty sure that if i buy one it will be the nook. I appreciate everyone's opinions. I just wanted to make sure it was a sound investment. I know my son will read every book imaginable on it.

the iPhone can use the kindle app free as well....if you have a app accessible phone there is probably an ereader app on it you can try. The screen isn't as big on my iPhone as it is the kindle but it's also free since I paid for my phone already. I've read probably 25 books on it. That said I prefer holding a paper or hardback book in my hand while reading but for on the go or while waiting somewhere, etc it's quite nice having it handy.

also, for those having a hard time with the eyes..on my Kindle App there is an option to change the text color..to white font on black bg, black font on white bg, or sepia on a light brown bg...you click the Aa thingy on the bottom of the menu. I prefer the white font on black bg which isn't the default setting so maybe try that and see if it helps :)

I have a Kindle, iPad, and an iPhone.
I cannot stand reading on my iPad. The eye fatique is horrible for me. On the other hand, I love reading on my Kindle. I could not live w/out it!

Considering the Kindle is the best selling product on Amazon - I believe a long time. I don't think you understand the differences in the screen, you need to see it to believe it. When you look at the Kindle or Nook - it looks like a book page. It looks like it has the same texture as a paper page. It's easy on the eyes. A Kindles battery - as long as the wireless is shut off - will last close to 3 weeks with normal use. I consider normal about 2 - 3 hours of reading/day. The Kindle is on display at Targets now.

I have a Kindle app on my computer - on my DS iTouch. All that means is we can share books through the same account. I can have up to five devices on my one account.

I do have a device that is far more than my book reader - it's called my laptop. And it doesn't fit in my pocketbook. The average buyer of the iPad - buys 1.3 books.

I was thinking of buying the Nook for downloading books from the library - but I am holding off thinking the Kindle may add a software fix to enable rentals from the libraries??? I am hoping.

It is still back lit and hard on the eyes.

Due to the iPad being backlit, I can read without a light on. My seven-year-old daughter loves to read with it as we are driving and I don't have to have a dome light on. Each person will like different readers for different reasons.

While true my Macbook may be capable of reading books on it, it isn't as convenient to me as the iPad. The versitility of the iPad works for me. I can watch movies, surf the internet, answer emails, use it for navigation, listen to the radio and still read either iBooks or Amazon Kindle books. I can even post messages on this board from it.

I can use it to find where I'm at inside of WDW Resort, the park hours and where I want to eat, what's on the menu and how long transportation will take to get me there. I can also check the lines at any attraction. It's a bedside clock when I'm traveling, a digital picture frame on my desk when I'm at work.

I don't need a battery that lasts weeks, just all day because eventually I have to recharge my "batteries" as well. When I sleep my iPad sleeps.

An iPAD and a Kindle are really two different products with two very diverse price points. iPADS are much more expensive than Kindles. Kindles cost $189 and the cheapest iPAD that does not have 3G capability is $500. Add $130 to that if you want 3G. As I said .... not even in the same ballpark.

As for will Amazon stop making Kindles? I really doubt it. Amazon is heavily invested in eBook technology and has been for years now. But if they did I'm not sure it would matter to current Kindle owners or why it would be a deterrent to those currently considering buying Kindles. We would simply use our Kindles until they no longer worked and then our next purchase would be a machine that could display our existing library - be that an iPAD or whatever.

Now I really don't think a kindle or a nook or whatever is going to save money and it is not an investment. If you want to save money on books, you will stick with the library where they are guaranteed to be $0. However, there are tons of low cost and bargain priced books available digitally.
