Can someone explain how 3G works with the Nook. I'm looking into getting one but just don't understand the concept. I know they keep advertising for 3G things and I am just :confused3. If I had 3G does it work at Disney? :confused3

Also, I was wondering if Barnes and Noble has offered any deal in the past (or if there are rumors for this year) on the Nook on Black Friday or closer to Christmas. I'm trying to figure out when the best time to buy this would be.

Thanks!

Can't answer the second, but as to the first:

Yes, you'd be able to use it at Disney. When one of these devices advertises as 3G, think of it as a *very* limited use smart phone. :thumbsup2 Rather than a wireless internet connection, you'll use the same connection that a cell phone uses to browse and download the book you want.

Now you might have some signal issues, just like you can with a cell phone.

Last year, the Nook was still backordered for 2 months at Thanksgiving, so there was no incentive for them to offer a Black Friday deal. This year could be different.

3G is just built in Internet access so that you can download books anywhere, anytime. You can't access their web browser via 3G. I have a 3G model, but for me, the 3G wouldn't be a selling point - I have wifi at home and close to the office, so if I need to download a book in most situations, I don't have to worry about access.

I have the Nook with the 3G - when I bought it last winter wi-fi only was not an option so I didn't even think about it. And really, most of the time it runs on the wi-fi connection that I have at home. But when I travel it will default to the 3G connection automatically. I like having the 3G as many of the places I travel to don't have free wireless internet. In August I was able to buy and download books as we traveled down I-90 in OH. In July I was able to buy and download books in the middle of the woods. I was able to buy and download books when we were at the beach. I used it to buy and download a book while I was waiting in the parking lot for an interview time. But... with proper planning it's definitely something you can live without. For that matter with the Nook's sideloading capability you can even live without the wi-fi.

As to the Black Friday Deals; I've seen posts internet deal sites that are suggesting that the Nook will be $129 on BF but this was for the wi-fi only model, nothing has been mentioned anywhere about the 3G Model. http://dealnews.com/features/The-dealnews-2010-Black-Friday-Predictions/389192.html?page=6

I have the Nook with 3G bought it a few months ago and i LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Anyways I have been able to download books from anywhere that I have been it just connects, I shop and the book appears in my library. That said I do have a beta version on my phone that has a web browser that appears to be trying to give internet access. So far I have only been able to connect to the barnes and noble site but it does appear that they are trying to do more with it.
