Non-point stays?

If you don't own as many points as you'd need to cover all the stays you might take in a year, what's your preferred method for covering those other trips? Just curious if folks are still playing at the Values/Mods for quick weekends every so often, or if you rent or transfer points, or some other solution I don't know about? 👀

Buy more points!

ETA:Seriously though if it’s going to be a usual occurrence, the most cost effective solution is to add on.

I almost included a disclaimer in my post to the effect of "Please don't just say Buy More Points" 😜

I guess I was asking more about the occasional trip that would not fall within your ordinary vacation cadence, thus my example of an odd weekend. Something you wouldn't be planning on/paying for every year or budget into your normal point calculations.

Swan/Reserve is our go-to.

DH and I have stayed at Pop, POR, and CSR on several occasions when we were out of points and wanted to visit, such as for Star Wars Weekend, Pandora previews, etc. We’ve also stayed at other timeshares via other ownerships.

In order to save points since we're point misers at heart, we usually show up extremely early on the day we arrive so it's like we get a full day and don't pay for the night before which usually would've been an expensive Friday night. I know some people just go to a value/moderate resort for the night if they know they're going to end up checking in late. Swolphin is also a good option obviously if you know you're going to be staying at Boardwalk/Beach Club or really just in general it's a good option.

Thanks, those are great examples of the types of trips I'm referring to! Is there a DVC discount on normal Disney hotel rooms or is AP still the better bet usually?

Great strategy. Our local airport usually only has 1 flight per day to Orlando, so we're going to be in the boat sometimes of checking in 9-10pm and it seems like a waste of points for the night although logically I know the math per point still works out "cheaper" than a cash room, lol.

Mixture.
We have rented points, bought transfer points, and bought one time use points.
Depends on what we are looking for and price point and availability.

Just a little sass 😉

Early on in our DVC journey, we supplemented with stays at CSR and CBR. We didn’t have enough points when we started so that how we made it through. We tried staying offsite at Disney Springs hotels but it just wasn’t the same feel.

I like the OTUP plan a lot.

Oh darn that sucks, ours has one that leaves at like 6AM so we usually get to Orlando by 830-9 or so. If you didn't want to spend that many points and you know you're going to be getting in late I'd go for like a cheap OKW studio at 7 months just so you have somewhere to sleep and then switch to your actual resort after that first night. I'm not sure where you normally stay but I'd be mad if I were spending RIV/VGF/Poly level points and not getting in until 9-10PM

I recently booked Pop Century for a 5 night food and wine trip, end of September. I don’t have many 2024 points left and even if I did there’s nothing available with DVC. I consider it an “extra trip” and don’t want to spend a lot. I already had 2 DVC trips this year and 2 more to follow next month and December.

That's definitely the type of situation I picture doing this for. Pop's always good in a pinch :)

Lol, we don't have a 'normal' yet since we're new members but in the example of our upcoming trip for Dopey in January- we won't land at the airport until 9:30pm or so, so I booked a standard room at AKV for that night, though we switch to Savanna view the next day. Saved just 3 points but I felt clever about it lol and saved us having to switch resorts at least (first plan was to do All Stars).

You should waitlist the value studio for that night alone and then if it comes through you get to save even more :P

Before we were DvC we rented points or did swan/dolphin which often had discounts. Now I would consider those and OTU, maybe try moderate or value on the skyliner. Also to accommodate flights on the ends of our trip would use hotel point redemptions.

This is a good point, you can use that first night as an opportunity to try something you wouldn't normally get to try. On one of our trips we tried out a room at Gran Destino tower at Coronado which was actually quite nice. We made a date night out of it at 3 Bridges. Our next one we may give POFQ a try since I haven't been there in over 10 years and my partner has never stayed there
