Do you ever use your points to go to a non-DVC resort (such as AKL) just for a "change of pace". Before you say it... I do realize it would "cost" more...BUT do any of you ever...??????
I have stayed at Disneyland resorts using points. But my home resort is BWV and I can't imagine staying anywhere but there when at WDW. (If I were an animal lover, I would consider AKL -- at least, until I looked at the points chart and realized how much more expensive it would be!) I suppose, if you wanted a really romantic or super extravagant stay for some reason, using points to stay at the Grand Floridian might be worth the cost. But I just don't see the other WDW resorts being all that "special" with the exception of the two I just mentioned.
We had to cancel our trip at the last minute once and almost 300 points went into holding. We had to use them fast! So we stayed at the AKL concierge level. It was a wonderful trip!
We used cash to stay at AKL on a Saturday night and stretch a seven night trip to eight. Made the most sense to us since we have a small number of points and I really wanted to stay at AKL before my kids got to old to be wowed by giraffes.
If you have the points, though - go for it. They are yours to use.
As a wise man once said (Maistre Gracey to be exact), the best use of points is what makes you happy! There are many here who have used their points for Disney Cruises, or other WDW or DL resorts and have been thrilled by it. In the end, if that's what someone wants to do with their "prepaid vacation points", then that's a good decision for them as long as they understand the options and make an informed choice.
We haven't stayed anywhere but a DVC resort with our points, but during the next three decades........
