Non-denomenational ceremony with a Chupah?

All you Disney jewish brides, please don't laugh at me for this question!!

I am jewish, but not very religious. DF is not jewish and may or may not be converting. Either way is fine for me, as we celebrates jewish holidays together anyways. But I would love to get married under a Chupah-is that allowed??

Are there any officiants that would agree to this mixed ceremony?

Hi! I'm jewish too and my boyfriend is not so I completely understand where you're coming from b/c we've discussed this as well. I am sure there are rabbis/priests/other who will marry mixed. You just have to find one.

And these days Chupahs are used as decorative pieces at many weddings so I say if you want one and are willing to shell out the cash for it, go for it!

My best friend got married last year to her non-Jewish fiance and they had a gorgeous chupah and a priest and a rabbi married them.

I'm Jewish and my fiance is not: I am giving strong consideration to purchasing/renting the chupah (for 250$) from Disney. What may stop me isn't tradition but the fact that we are having a very short ceremony (like 20 minutes tops, no attendants, etc) and I'm not certain I can justify to myself spending that much money for such a short amount of time.

As for the officiant, I'm a native midwesterner and no Rabbi or Cantor at any synagogue I've been associated with will officiate at an interfaith marriage. I suspect the Florida officiants (or east coast officiants in general) are more flexible on that. I have a Jewish friend who lives in Miami and she said she was certain I could find a reform Rabbi in the Orlando area who would perform the ceremony.

I pulled this Rabbi (he's the only Rabbi listed in their "official" officiant list) from the Disney Wishbook:

My mother is Christian, my father is jewish, they raised me very non-religious jewish. My DF is Catholic. Yipes!! We celebrate everything under the sun. We are having Jack Day as our officiant. He sent us 3 sampl ceremonies of Jewish/Catholic weddings. Oh and I say go right on ahead with the chuppah. I obsessively watch wedding shows and lots of the wedding on there have chuppahs without being Jewish. And you are!

I'm not certain: we are having a Wishes wedding (with approximately 59 guests) and no matter where we were having the wedding we would want it short and sweet. I suspect either Escapes or Wishes weddings can be as long (within reason) or as short as the bride/groom want. If our guests are shocked, so be it. We'll feed them well and they'll forget how short the ceremony was.

Rose is right: go for the chupah if you want it!

And about the chuppah: I'm a converted Jew [i.e. Jew by choice], my DBF is an atheist, and our families are strict Catholic [whew..lol] and we're still going to have a chuppah when we get married! Both of us *love* the significance behind it and it seems like a fantastic way to start your new lives together, under the framework of your new "home".

I think there's a picture of a non-Jewish Disney Bride who had the chuppah in her ceremony and it looked *gorgeous*!

You've convinced me-I want the Chupah. Wow, I feel like the WDW ceremony is less complicated than a "real world" one! My parents had been giving me grief that finding someone to run the ceremony was going to be impossible b/c DF is not jewish and I wanted to have a rabbi-

....maybe that's just her evil ploy to make me feel guilty for not marrying a jewish boy!

DF is actually athiest, but easy going with whatever ceremony we choose. He knows I would like some jewish tradition thrown in and he respects that.

Does anyone have any links or photos of a Disney ceremony with the chupah? I'd like to see what it looks like "in action" I don't plan to spend any extra $$ on additional flowers, so I'm hoping it will look ok the way it is.

I know my mom will cover the price of the chupah-she'll be psyched that we are choosing to have one!!

We had the same chupah - but without the flowers on it. I loved it - it looked so light and airy.
You can also just get the plain bamboo poles without the fabric on it which would lower the price.

Good to know!! Any idea on the price of the plain one without the fabric? Does it look ok without the fabric? Any pics of the plain one?

I don't have any pictures of it without the fabric - they showed me a picture of it at the planning session - Sorry!
It's just that plain bamboo that you can see under the fabric in the other pictures. Really simple.

Gotcha! I think I can picture it now...didn't realize the one with the fabric was also bamboo! Hmm...what to do. Well, if we can fit it into our budget (or if mom decides to pay!!) I guess we'll go with the fabric!

I say if you want one go for it... DF and I looked into one even though we are both Catholic because one of my favorite shows is Gilmore Girls and Luke built a chupah for Lorelai and so ever since I saw that episode I've wanted one too! Silly I know!!
