Can anyone recommend a good kind to try? Or have success stories to report using such a thing with a 4-year-old who is still warming up to fireworks? TIA!

We have a 7 year old who is still afraid of the sounds of fireworks. We tried headphones and that seemed to help a bit. If worse comes to worse, you can watch the fireworks from the beach at the Polynesian. We ate at O'hana at watched them from the beach, and my DD wasn't so scared.

Often the issue with fireworks isn't the noise, but the percussion. You can feel the boom even if the noise is muted.

You can see Wishes over the trees from the Wilderness Lodge Beach - it isn't a clear view, but its even more distant than the Poly.

I've heard great things about the Peltor juniors. They are around $13 at Amazon.

I've never tried headphones, but my boys use these and they work great at blocking out noise. They're a lot smaller & easier to carry around than headphones, too!:thumbsup2

My five year old slept right through the fireworks with these on. She usually has a very bad meltdown during the fireworks (and I have to leave with her) so I was glad that she was able to sleep through them. She did wake up right afterwards and I had not taken the earplugs out yet and she freaked out by not being to hear clearly. They are very inexpensive and you can get them at the grocery store or walmart.

My DS5 has major sensory issues in regards to sounds. Even the movie theater is too loud for him.

I went to Home Depot and bought headphones (earmuffs) that construction workers use when they work with loud machinery. DS has a rather large noggin.... so at their smallest size they worked perfectly for him.

We watched fireworks, went to shows and even lots of rides without any melt downs. We had tried other earplugs.... but nothing worked as well for us as these.

When my dd was 5, she wore a pair of earmuffs with a cloth band during noisy stuff at WDW- parades, certain rides, fireworks. She laughs now when she sees the photos.

Thanks. I tried the ear plugs for DGS4 this past Sept. but he still did not like the fireworks. I'll check out the earmuffs for our return visit this Jan.:thumbsup2

Add us to the list of families who use "earmuffs" in order to enjoy ourselves in loud areas. My DD3 has huge sensory issues - and we have tried more than one pair of earmuffs. The first pair we bought in the hunting/fishing/camping section of our local Dick's Sporting Goods store. They were the children's size, and while they worked well, they weren't good for long periods of time because they were a bit tight. The second pair my father bought her, and they are now our "go to" earmuffs. I always carry them in my bag, or at the very least keep them in the van. They look ridiculous, and are bulky, but worth it to keep everyone having fun.

These are the ones we like the best:

If I knew how to put pictures here, I could put half a dozen pics of my DD in her earmuffs. At parades, 4th of July, NYC, playing piano, even in loud public restrooms. (Well, I don't think I have a picture of that.) :-) We didn't get them until just after our last WDW trip - who knew she'd freak out at the fireworks then? And she was still in pull-ups so we didn't need to "use" the restrooms. With our luck, she'll outgrow this sensory thing by then and we won't need them. But we'll be lugging them around with us just in case! :-)

Good luck.

a problem for my older one. I bought the cheapies from WalMarts gun dept. Even with them, there were issues. Then I went to doubling up...the soft earplugs that you squeeze and insert into the ear, plus the headphones. That worked as long as we weren't directly under the fireworks.

I later came to realize that my son also had fears that the fireworks were going to fall on him. Sigh.

I've since wondered if taking a small MP3 player that had his favorite songs on it would have worked as well. It's too late to try...thankfully, he grew out of his noise issues when he was around 7.

We have used the Peltor ones with our twins since they were VERY young.... countless sporting events and 3 trips to Disney, and our kids have yet to get startled with them on! They are a God send.

We bought peltor ones for our kids for our trip next week. I'll let you know how it goes! My two refused to go to the reception for my brothers wedding because the music was too loud, I wish I had anticipated that I could have had these then, oh well.
