No water...well water

Ok today has been a bit strange. I was doing laundry and when I went to move the wash over to the dryer I noticed that it was stuck on rinse and was still pretty full of water. Figured I broke it somehow...lol. Went to dishes shortly after that and noticed we had no hot water.. our hot water freezes a couple times a winter so I just left on the faucet and didn't think about it much.

Went to flush the potty..no water in the tank to flush. So I continued to check every faucet in the house..NO WATER! We have some sort of heater thing for the pipes so i went and plugged it in around 12:30-1pm..still no water. The thing is its not really all that cold here. (Battle Creek, MI) It been pretty mild temp wise. Its 34 degrees right now. So frozen pipes don't seem right.

Any ideas what it could be? Who do you call for this sort of thing, the plumber? IS it likely the pump? IF so any ideas on cost? Should I give it a day or so before calling for help?

Any advice or help is appreciated.

Charity

There is usually a lever on the pressure tank that will turn off the pump if is senses a problem. If the level is in the off position try to move it to the 45 degree position and hold it. If the pump turns on and starts to fill keep holding it until ti is above your minimum tank pressure. If you get nothing, then it is possible your pump has burned out.

Call the well company or an appliance company that does well pumps. They can pull the pump, check all the wiring and put a new pump in the well. Be prepares for the cost. $2K is very possible.

We have a big blue tank in the basement that does something to pressurize the water coming into the house from the well. My Husband tells me that if this tank loses pressure, it can result in a loss of water. The only fix is to replace that pressurized blue tank. Beyond that...I have no idea.

It looks kind of like this: http://www.inspectapedia.com/water/WaterTankTypes.htm

Maybe that is yoru problem?

I'd call a plumber right away.

We have a crawl space which makes all of this soo much harder..we replaced our blue tank like that a year or two ago..they called it a bladder tank I think.

Have you confirmed that you have power to the pump? In my old house, the pump went out twice. The first time it was just a tripped breaker. I had never owned a home with a well before, so it took me a few minutes to figure it out. The next time it was the pump. Actually, one of the wires running down to the pump broke. I cost $1200 to have the wires running down to the pump replaced...

The blue tank is the pressure tank. Eventually the bladders will leak but it takes many years. The switch I am talking about it on that tank in the front and at the bottom. It is the pressure tank switch.

The second photo down in the link above shows the pressure switch. It is the black box.

Thats what I was thinking. We tripped a breaker quite a few times on our pump so we learned to check there first.

I'll check the breaker..I assume its in the garage with all the other outside breakers. Hopefully that is all it is..thanks guys. Any more advice is appreciated.

Ok checked the breaker and it was still in the "on" position. I did turn it off then back on but the water hasn't started flowing yet.

Ours turned out to be the PUMP. It shorted. And then they also replaced pipe that had rotted. And yes it was EXPENSIVE
If it's just the pump and depending on how deep your well is- it was around $2000 for that part of our issue.

Good luck. Call the well company.

do you have a water filter? Our well water gradually cut down to the point we had only a trickle from any of the faucets. Turned out dh forgot to change the filter. Changed it out, cleaned out all the faucets, we were back to normal pressure. Of course, this is after a week of dh obsessing over the pump going back instead of checking the smaller, cheaper issues first.
