No TV for a week...?

Yes. We got a Tivo many years ago. It streamlined the time we spent watching TV, especially when we watch no commercials. The shows we like record and we watch them when we want to. We don't flip through channels looking for something to watch. We don't turn it on unless we're going to watch it...which saves on energy.

We get our news from radio and internet. I like to turn on Sirius on my computer and just do stuff around the house or work on my music.

my friend has a tv but it isn't hooked up to cable or an antenna. they have it hooked to a dvd player, and rent movies/tv shows from netflix. it works out amazingly well. they don't have it on often at all, certainly not daily, but they still get some use from it occasionally. and all for less than $20 a month in netflix costs! that to me is brilliant...especially when I pay what I do for cable.

I wasn't sure how I would like her system until I visited her for a week last spring. when I got home I found myself keeping the tv off far more than I used to.

I grew up in a family that had the television on constantly and I can honestly say that is has had no ill effects on me nor my lovely children; Beaver and Pebbles.

DH threatens to do this almost daily. He wants to throw the tv out the window - to make room for more family time, and to save a little money.

He finds the tv hard to resisit. I don't, really, and the kids do have some shows they really enjoy. But it is almost always on in the background. I think I would miss it to tell you the truth.

Our girls' school does a screen-time turn off week every Spring. They talk about why you shouldn't watch so much tv, and offer suggestions on other things you can be doing besides watching tv. Last year they had activities at the school every night during the week to keep the kids occupied.
