No Tonga toast for me

Huh? Up to no good for warning a guest of a potential cross-contamination? What possible "no good" thing could he be up to?
And it's against what "Disney has been all about"?
While it's very possible to say he was being overly cautious it really a strange leap to conclude he was up to no good, whatever that means[/QUOTE

That kind of comment drives me nuts. We have no idea about the OP specific circumstances other than she has a life-threatening allergy. Hmmmmmm..This Chef chose to take caution because he had concerns about a fryer and possible cross-contamination, and the poster, who because she has had conversations with Disney chefs, now fromth comfort of her keyboard, vilifies the Chef. Many of us have spoken to Chefs and have been refused items due to cross contamination concerns. Personally, I thank the Chef, not cry foul.

I also have a shellfish allergy...obviously (to me) that OP's allergy is MUCH more severe than mine. I am wondering after speaking with her if the chef determined that her allergy is so severe he would need to be very extreme in his restriction with her.

If they don't have more than one fryer, caution is warranted.

Accommodation for food allergies does not mean "we will always make you the exact same item modified for allergy." It means "there will be something you can eat." In this case, it meant that anything requiring the deep-fryer was best passed over in favor of another item.

I don't know if Kona has a separate allergy fryer, but if they did the fryer would have to be free of all the major allergens Disney cater for. Tonga Toast is full of gluten so it couldn't go in the allergy free fryer without contaminating it for other allergy sufferers. Props to the chef for recognising cross contamination through fryer oil, I've encountered far too many (not at Disney) who think the heat somehow kills the allergens :sad2:

I wonder why the chef didn't offer to just cook the Tonga toast on the griddle instead?

I don't think it makes a difference how severe the allergy is. They should warn if there is any possibility of cross contamination. I think all the outrage here is based on the fact that there actually was that possibility and that they should have had a separate allergy safe fryer (just for seafood allergies? Not sure it can be blamed on the chef).

Tonga toast is not cooked on a griddle. It's deep fried. Whatever would have resulted, it would not have been Tonga toast. Maybe they could have been asked to come up with a similar dish that is not fried, but there still might be a cross-contamination issue depending on what's cooked on the griddle.

The chef did oversee how my breakfast was made and to make sure there was no cross-contamination going on.
I am thankful for that .
I'm grateful that he took the time out to talk to me and expressed his concerns with me and offered suggestions of things that I could have to eat .
