No to bikes, yes to golf carts!

So I was convinced to allow the bikes on the trip coming up 6-13 to 6-15 since I am not looking to walk a marathon in a two day stay in 90 degree weather, got to doing some math and I figured on our 3,200 mile trip, gas at $2.50/gallon and the loss in MPG for bikes on the camper at 2 MPG thats roughly $110 in "extra gas". I just caledl and to a Golf cart for $108 plus tax for our two day stay...funny how they have that figured out - are the golf cart rates region specific by chance Since we are staying at 4 campgrounds on this trip and the bikes ride on top of the camper, we are opting for the golf carts for this trip for ease and speed.

My questions are how long will the Golf Cart last between charges? Are there adequate places to charge it, do I need a heavy duty extension cord? Are there any rules about adult liquids in red dixie cups? We will bring our bikes next time for a week stay.

Since pulling my 21ft hybrid only drops the mpg on my truck by 5mpg, I seriously doubt that carrying bikes is going to drop your mileage by 2 mpg. My guess is that the drop in mileage is negligible, but if you're happy with the golf cart, then that's what counts.

Now that is some darned good math!

Not sure how long a charge lasts, we never ran ours out. We just made sure to plug ours in at the site every night and never had a problem, and that includes several long looping runs.

There are posts at every site to charge your cart. We didn't need an extra cord (just a reasonable parking job)

There are also some charging stations in the Settlement/Marina area, but not a ton.

Nope! Just be careful not to spill if you take the turns too fast!

You will enjoy the golf cart but you could bring your bikes along too if you really wanted to. We tow an enclosed trailer with our golf cart in it and we don't even lose that much in gas mileage.

the cup has to a LARGE red cup ,
it has to start off full,
and has to be empty by the time you get back.
Repeat.

Not to mention all of the innocent bugs that will have to sacrifice their lives because of the bikes being in their fly-zone on the hiway. For the love of the bugs....rent the cart....and bring PLENTY of Red Dixie Cup Filler!!!!

Actually the Tow Vehicle is a 2007 Tahoe, runs at around 16 MPG no camper, 13 MPG with the camper and around 11 MPG with the bikes on top of the camper. Camper is 3500 lbs or so loaded, high wall popup, about same height as tahoe with out the bikes, not scientific for sure, but this has been our experience...anyhoo, the looping sounds like fun on the golf cart so we will try it (plus what might seem like fuzzy math convinced my wife the bikes werent worth the hassle - so lets go with it)

Well the mileage loss makes sense when you're talking about mounting them on top of the pop-up. The extra drag from the bikes could cause the big reduction in MPG. Now slapping mine on the back of the 5th wheel ain't doing much at all.

Mmmmm.... Wonder Beagle has so much fun riding around at the Fort in a golf cart that he sleeps all the way home, thereby reducing drag and SAVING you 3 mpg on the return trip?!?!

I once owned a Yugo.....turning on the air conditioner would sometimes cause your head to slam into the windshield! If I stuck my hand out of the drivers window while on the highway, it would spin out of control to the right. If I brought an extra pack of cigarettes and a full bladder, I couldnt use overdrive without burning up the transmission. A full tank of gas would decrease my mpg by as many miles as I had gallons...it got 50 mpg If I only had one gallon of gas in it!!

When I was a kid we had an old diesel VW Rabbit and a tent trailer type of camper. My dad swears to this day that he would have to turn the AC off to get the fully loaded rig up our incredibly steep driveway.

I believe that. I used to have a Rabbit diesel. I clocked it 0 to 60mph taking 53 seconds. The GC's at the Fort have more horsepower than that Rabbit.

To the OP...congratulations on your upcoming trip!!! Fill one of those red cups for me!
