Is there no sales tax on anything in Mass?

Unfortunately, there is sales tax on practically everything in Massachusetts. I think the only thing I can think of is unprepared food bought at the grocery store, though paper products and non-food items are still taxed here. They don't call us Taxachusetts for nothing! :teeth:

NH's the one with no sales tax. Mass does have a weekend or two a year where they don't have sales tax

MA has no tax on clothes either....I miss that! No tax on food is also a big money saver, after moving to a state with food tax! :earseek:

Since I am bored, I will be MA state sales tax geek.....MA actually has a sales and use tax. That means, even if you drive to NH and buy a wide screen TV tax free.....if you intend to use in in MA, then you are supposed to fill out a form and report and pay tax.

Same thing if you go on vacation buy stuff and bring it home to MA.....

I had a CPA, who will remain nameless, tell me that it would be a cold day in you know where when MA could actually enforce that!

Actually, I am confused by the Taxachusett thing. I am too young to remember the details of the Dukakis administration, but I hear it has something to do with when he was in power here.

We do not pay sales tax on food or clothing, that is HUGE. We also have one of the lowest sales tax rates in the country, 5%. So, yes, I do believe we are called Taxachusetts for nothing.

The "Taxachusetts" nickname is actually no longer relevant. MA has lower sales tax than many other states and actually ranks a lot lower in income and property taxes than it did during the Dukakis years. Rhode Island actually has a much higher tax % per capita. Actually 31 states rank higher

I believe Maine has the highest tax rate in the country. MA isn't bad at all in comparison. I live in sales tax free NH, but they make up for it in other ways.

We have no sales tax in NH but they try to compensate for that oversight with the property tax. :teeth:

you're not kidding about NH making up for the sales tax in other ways. Property taxes are ridiculous. My friend has a home in keene, nh and taxes on it are almost $10,000 and were not talking a multimillion dollar home here.

It freaks me out when I'm on vacation out of state and I have to pay city tax, county tax and state tax on everything including food!!!! I'm not used to paying tax on food or clothing!
