No Rooms for Dec 6-10 - Should I be worried?

A primary (although not only) factor in my planning our week at Disneyland was low crowds (thus weekdays in early Dec my grand plan).

My original thought was the Monday (arrive early afternoon) - Friday (depart late afternoon) the week directly after Thanksgiving weekend but it costs more to fly the Monday after Thanksgiving than the following weeks up until x-mas.

So the decision then became Dec 6 - 10 or 13 - 17, both Mon - Fri for those scoring at home. Same plan, arrive at SNA about 115pm and on depart day have a 4:30pm flight for 3 full days, 2 half days in parks.

We picked Dec 6-10 thinking the further away from actual X-Mas the better. We then hit the cast member party issue as common thinking on this board was it would be Dec 6 and 7. But I was okay with that, actually thought it would be good - I didn't mind shorter park hours if it meant lower crowds (locals avoiding short park hours).

Now it seems cast member parties on Dec 13,14, so that's fine.

We have a DVC 1Bdr Villa booked so we're fine, however I was curious.

Now to my point (thanks for sticking with me here)....
I just checked on Disneyland.com for a reservation package ("special offers") the 6th - 10th.
NONE available at any DLR hotel, only 1 good neighbor hotel was shown as an option.
Same search for 13-17 and all 3 DLR hotels are available as options with several room type choices shown.

Should I be worried? Is there going to be some kind of crazy crowd spike while we're there during what is supposed to be very low attendance???
Of course, nobody knows for certain but ugh.

I tried to another search for just hotel thinking maybe it was "special offers" causing it to show no availability and just rooms would show availability. However, right now when I try hotel only searches the system tells me there was an error and I should try again later.

Now, full disclosure on those dates. There is a HUGE conference (20k attendees needing a peak of 9000 rooms plus an overlap with another conf = 1500/295) at the Anaheim Convention Center that week. So this could be overflow for that conference grabbing up nearby rooms that may or may not affect crowds.

Also in my head - is did the cast member parties move due to expected crowds 6-7 and also DL open until 9pm not 8pm that week,

So a few of my theories:

"I'm screwed, it will be like a Saturday in July with only cooler weather for the huge crowds"

"The Disney hotels always sell out, even during low season, very normal"

"It is the convention and the convention goers families will take over the park"

"It is the convention but that actually works to my advantage - they took all the rooms but they aren't going to Disneyland"

Not trying to be paranoid or a worry wart (yes, grandma I said worry wart) and certainly know I'll have a great time no matter what - touring plan in hand being more necessary perhaps but as much as anything I'm curious and would greatly appreciate thoughts from the wise minds of DISboards!

Thanks in Advance!

I wouldn't worry.Remember, there are a lot of people that travel to Anaheim for conventions that won't take the time to visit the parks. I've never been to DL the week after Thanksgiving, but it sounds like a good time to go. I've been on trips there before where it stated on Disneyland.com that all hotels were booked, and the crowds were manageable. I hope you have a good trip. :goodvibes

ONE of those days may be the source of your "no rooms available" search. Maybe there are holdover from the previous weekend, or maybe for the following weekend they are arriving Thursday....

I just did a few searches and it seems that the 6th and/or 7th is the the days that there is no or little availability. I found openings later in the week. Why? I'm not sure, but I wouldn't worry too much.

Someone just posted on MP that there is a pharmacy convention Dec. 5-9 with 9,000 rooms booked in the area. This could be the reason.

We are going Dec 8-12. I am not worried I hear the first and second week is manageable. I know what you mean though about rooms. We booked about 8 weeks ago but now our off site hotel is booked and my friends are having a hard time finding a place to stay. My hope is it's convention people and they stay away from the parks!

Keep in mind also that the 4th and 5th (weekend) is when they'll be doing Candlelight Processional. This brings in a lot of higher ups and it's possible that is why Monday and maybe even Tuesday are booked up as well.

Remeber that when you try to book multiple days in any online hotel reservation website if even ONE of your days is full the system will reject your entire reservation. So.......Try doing your hotel search for each day separately and you should be able to figure out which day is preventing your stay. If it's at the beginning or end of your visit, you might opt to stay offsite that one day and then move into the resort. If it's in the middle of your stay, that might not be very practical to move out then back in.

While I know staying onsite it wonderful, keep in mind that there are some really nice hotels offsite that are still an easy walk to the park. Most people spend very little time actually IN their hotel so maybe you won't miss that aspect as much as you think you might.

We haven't been to DL in a couple years, but before that we went the week after Thanksgiving for several years and it has ALWAYS been low crowds, great weather, and therefore extra pixie dust. We'll be there this year and I'm expecting the same.

I know how how you are feeling. I have always tried to go when the crowds were low. In early March 09 when I went I was just shocked at how large the crowd was each day. No we didn't have to wait all that long for the rides really, but compared to other holidays (mostly in feb) there was just soo many people. I can hardly stand the Fantasmic crowds!! Anyway the crowd calculator says that based on stats from previous years.....

That out of 10

Dec 6th - 2.6 Disneyland, 5.3 D California
Dec 7th - 2.4 DL 5.4 DC
Dec 8th - 3.5 DL 4.8 DC
Dec 9th - 4.3 DL 3.7 DC
Dec 10 - 6.5 DL 6.1 DC

I think you can be sure it won't be like a summer day but it is scary to have a lot of time to plan and think your getting the best days when ???:scared1:
it backfires!

Hopefully all the conv people will go to their conv!!

When I go the busiest day is the Saturday so we are going to head off to Universal Studios that day. I do love it there. The Simpsons ride is the best ride I've ever been on and the Shrek 3D is just amazing!! Looking forward to the Peter Jackson King Kong 3D on the tram as well!

Good Luck!

Hello Fellow Jayhawk,
I am also worrying sick. We are travelling the 7-14 with 5 days in the parks and 1 day at Knotts. I also am finding it scary that there are no rooms in the DLR for our trip. Thankfully we already have a suite at an offsite hotel but I worry about what the crowds in the park are going to be like. I noticed the convention and worry that people are bringing their families to the parks while they go to the convention. Also, how many people are going to stay over from the CP?? My mom finally told me to just calm down and know that we are going and we will have fun. She is under the mentality of expect horrible crowds then we can be excited and relieved if the crowds and lines are light.

Where did you get this crowd calculator? Have you used it before and found it accurate? Can you tell me what it says for the 11th-13th?

Didn't mean to panic anyone - I think "heavy" vs "light" in early Dec is still relative and they won't be terrible by any means.

The CP generally does not have too much (if any) spill over to the next week, usually locals making up the large crowds.

touringplans.com introduced touringplans.com/disneyland just this week. They themselves say it's "beta" and although still good, probably not as spot on as WDW data they've been perfecting from years.

DL is also now part of their lines app and mobile website.
