Would dried onion flakes taste the same in tuna salad? I want to have a tuna sandwich and tomato soup for dinner, but I don't have any onions and don't want to drive 14 miles round-trip for an onion.. LOL :goodvibes

I would probably re-hydrate them first (there should be the measurements on the container) and then mix them in. Won't taste 'exactly' the same, but should get you close. If you don't rehydrate them, you could have crunch little bits, instead of onion-y bits.

Thanks! I'll try that.. I don't want any "crunchy" bits..:goodvibes Might not be a bad idea to let in set for awhile in the fridge too after I put the Miracle Whip in.. Luckily I'm here alone - so I can eat whenever I want.. LOL

Yes, I use dried onion flakes in my tuna salad. I also add celery salt or celery seed.

Do they "soften" up just by stirring them in?

It's miserable here - damp, raining - figured it would be a good night for a tuna sandwich and some tomato soup..:thumbsup2

I have been using mrs grass onion soup mix in my tuna salad for years. It's very good.

Sounds yummy. My love of onions is why I buy 10 bags of frozen chopped onions at a time and keep them in the freezer for whenever I feel like it. Same goes for Peppers, but only 2 bags of those. Sure they are better fresh but for backup, or especially for cooking, frozen chopped is easy breezy. I just made a giant pot of french onion soup with them and some store bought beef broth, recipe from Taste of home... Vive la onion!

I never knew they had bags of frozen chopped onions! Do they come in smaller than 10 lb. bags? Peppers too - huh?

Last year I chopped a few onions and put them in the freezer here at the lake (never thought of doing it with peppers), but I haven't made my big "stock up" shopping trip yet so I don't have onions OR peppers.. LOL

The frozen chopped onions and peppers I've seen are in the frozen veggie section, in the same size bags as frozen peas, carrots, etc. More like 1 lb bags. I have never actually bought them- I chop up fresh- but I have seen them.

I don't eat tuna, but I used the dried flakes of onion mixed in with my hamburger instead of sliced onion. I love it that way, for meatloaf too.

You can use dried onions. Just reconstitute them in some warm water for about 20 minutes and then use in your recipe.

BTW, you can make your own frozen onions and peppers. next time you have some onions, chop up 2-3 and spread them on a cookie sheet. Put them in the freezer until they are hard, then slide the individually frozen pieces into a freezer bag. You do the same thing with peppers. I cut them into some long pieces, too. You can dump them into your casserole frozen or thaw them out and saute them in the pan.

I will definitely be doing something like this after I make my "stock up" shopping trip - 22 miles away.. I will be getting all sorts of vegetables and fruits because I refuse to go over to "town" and pay the ridiculous prices they charge at the "Give Us All Your Money And No One Gets Hurt" grocery store!! :headache:

I recently discovered frozen chopped onions. :thumbsup2 I've put those in tuna salad too.

And I've started chopping & freezing the remainder of fresh onions on hand because they too spoil before I get to them.

I made some beef stew crockpot kits to put in the freezer. Chopped onions, celery & carrots & freeze in a bag. Chopped meat & freeze in another bag. On the mornings I want to start a beef stew, I just place the ingredients in the crockpot, add water & seasoning packet, and chop & add 3 potatoes. The potatoes doesn't freeze well, so I have to do those on the day I make the beef stew.

I buy a "seasoning mix" which is a mixture of chopped onions, green peppers and celery. It's great for a weight watchers frittata (and makes it fast in the morning!!!).

And C.Ann, the onions and peppers come in small sizes -- 10 oz. or so.

I've also started food processing a big bag of onions and freezing. Saves time when you need it!

Why can't you just make the sandwich without the onion? I personally think onion flakes are disgusting.
