How many car keys are you given when you rent a car? We rented from Hertz last week, and there were 2 keys in the car we had to return with a problem. The second car they gave us had just one key. When I innocently asked for the second key, they very rudely said they have never given out more than one key, and listed several reasons why. They practically acused me of lying about the first car. (It had already been taken away.) Just curious how this works for other people.

I rent with Hertz quite a bit. Sometimes you get one key other times you get two.

One time I lost the keys and they towed out a new car to me. They explained it was a car from out of state and they didn't have the extra key.

With National, sometimes I have received 2 keys, sometimes 1. The problem is I could never figure out how to open the ring they use to put the second key in my wallet in case I lose the other one! I like it when they include a remote with the key.

Almost every time I rent from Hertz I get two keys. Matter of fact, the last time I got three. Two regulars and one valet.

By the way whenever I get someone as rude as the one you described I look them in the face and address them by name telling them my policy is to report them to corporate and then follow thru.

I ususally only get one key. However, it's really easy to go to a K-mart, Home Depot, etc. and have another key made for under $2. It's a cheap solution for having to share a key or worrying about losing your only key. After I return the car, I just throw the key away.

I've had this same problem. Last two rentals we've had nearly new Pontiac Grand Prix. Each came with two keys with remote on a single key ring with no obvious way to separate the keys. This is probably just as well, since I remember a rental a number of years ago where I did manage to separate two sets of keys (back when you needed a separate key to unlock the trunk) and forgot to return the spare set when I dropped off the car. I suspect that might be the cause of some cars coming with only a single key!

The only problem with the two keys including remote on a single keyring is that it makes for a bulky "package" when I have to put the keys in my pocket. A good reason for using valet parking as much as possible ;).

With the newer cars it may not be possible to get a key made. More and more your seeing the electronic chips imbedded with the key.

I seperate the keys with wire cutter and then return the keys on a $1.00 large key ring.

Good thing I did one time. I had a Crown Vic with the key pad entry and knew the combination. Well I left the keys in the car AND the key pad didn't work (I had been using it so I knew it was working.) That other key I gave the wife saved the day.

Gosh, it costs $75+ to get a key for our cars with those chips they have in them to start the car.
