Hi All!
Hearing that 'work' is going to be going on on the Polynesian resort main pool and..shutting down the volcano pool/slide during presidents week 2012- what the?!?! What the what would you do? Can do? First dumbo and Big thunder mountain, now this? :headache: Thoughts?? Advise? Guidance? My kids are gonna freak!!:sad1:

What can you do? If the pool is that big of a deal, see if there is another resort to change to or I'm sure they will let you utilize another resort's pool. In February, not sure how many days will be warm enough to spend at the pool. I know when we stayed at the Poly in March there was one 78 day and that was it. Otherwise, you do everything else Disney has to offer except those three things. It looks at though you go pretty often, so there is always next time. Don't let it ruin your trip. :goodvibes

It is natural that refurbishments are done during January/February time period due to some slower times - there are still a few holidays peppered in there, but not the crowds you see the rest of the year for long periods.

It is the drawback of going in January/February. You have to expect it and work around.

You can either move to another resort in order to have an outside pool, not knowing what the weather is going to be like and if you are even going to be able to swim or you can stay put and make the best of it.

If you put on a happy face, no doubt the family will too.

Ah, put on a happy face... with the fog, drizzle and melting snow outside... whah! We're going during PEAK vacation week- the Poly is sold out, and crowd levels are at 9's and 10's- first time going without ripping the kids out of school...one in HS now and they really frown upon that- so... I guess I have to let this one go to the tiki gods... just kills me for the $$$ we've shelled out... being Mainers, my kids would swim even if it was 50* out!!

While it is to be expected for these refurbs to be done this time of year, I can understand being disappointed.
Have you thought of switching resorts?
We did a split stay last February. Our first 2 nights were at Pop. Then we got a letter they were closing the pool. We switched to CSR because the first two days weren't park days and we wanted to swim. We got there and they closed the main pool the entire time for a convention:confused3:rotfl:

I can laugh now. Wasn't so funny at the time!
I would switch in your case unless your heart is really set on the Poly. With crowds as high as the ones during Presidents Week I'd want my resort time to be as enjoyable as possible so we could take a break. Maybe The Contemporary or WL so you are still close to MK?
Or Beach and Yacht club have a fabulous pool area!

I understand your disappointment, I am feeling the no BTMRR and TT during our trip. Hopefully Dumbo will be up and running when we arrive.

Can you change resorts?

Emily

There was a thread about this a few weeks ago. On that thread, people said they heard only the slide was being closed - not the whole pool. And that the slide would only be closed for a few days, not the whole week as its not a major refurb. Someone else said the last time Poly was having work done on the slide/pool, guests were allowed to use the pool at GF so maybe that will be an option.

From another Mainer I get it. My girls would be in the pool also. Have you tried looking into another resort ?

We are in the same boat. We actually booked the Poly based on the pool slide, so it being closed is a deal breaker for us. No cast member will confirm if it is actually going to be closed during our stay. The Club Level IPO cast members said that they do not know of anything about a closure and would notify me if there was one. If I get there and the slide is closed, I am going to demand to be moved.

I check another site quite frequently that posts the building permits as they are posted on the Reedy Creek District website.

Disney can be infamous for applying for pre-permits, as they did for the entire POR refurbishment several months before it started. Then they slowly applied by the building as the refurbishments occurred.

I can tell you I went back to October 2011 permits and there is nothing for the Poly pool, up to January 20th.

In the other thread, several people mentioned they heard the slide only would be closed for "re-glossing" or "re-finishing". They said the pool would be open and the slide would only be closed for a few days. Do you know if they'd need a permit to re-coat the slide? If not, that would coincide with what the other thread was saying.

I just sent another message to IPO about this and this was the response:

Aloha!

The slide to the Volcano Pool will close on January 30 for 6 to 8 weeks for refurbishments. These refurbishments only effect the slide, and not the pool. Both the Volcano Pool and the Quiet Pool will still be open. During this refurbishment time, guests of the Polynesian are welcome to use the pool at the Grand Floridian, and we are providing additional boat transportation to the Grand Floridian.

I'm staying at the Poly during this time and I am concerned as well. It surprises me though because the GF slide/pool is listed as being refurbished during this time and that is supposed to be where they send Poly guest during a refurbishment.

You are correct; they would not need a permit for this.

For instance, we seal and re-stripe some of our parking lots every couple of years. We do not have to get a permit, because we are replacing "like and kind." However, if we patched, make repairs, sealed cracks, etc, then we would be required to get a permit.

Good call!
