No Motion Sickness!!

On our trip last week, I didn't get motion sickness even once, and I rode everything! I couldn't believe it, because many rides at the local Six Flags park will make me nauseous.

I was soooo scared about going on Mission:Space after all the hype, but I had no problem at all. Granted, I followed instructions and kept my eyes on the screen (aside from quick glances down to find the buttons). I also had a banana for breakfast and put a peppermint candy in my mouth as I got into the capsule, and those may have had something to do with it. I'd been told they were good precautions to take. Still, I'd spent months worrying over that ride, and I was so happy to have no problems at all!

I didn't do anything special for the other rides, including Star Tours & Body Wars, and had no problem at all.

Yay! It's like being 16 again. :sunny:

Did anyone else get a happy surprise like this?

I rode the original one. DW practically had to drag me onto it, though! :teeth:

Well I don't really seem to get motion sickness and I love thrill rides, but even Mission space makes rumblelies in my tumblies...BUT STILL LOVE TO RIDE IT! I too would like to know if you went on the spin or no spin. When you went through the lines you had the option.

Wow, that is such great news! Were they just the peppermint candies you can buy in the grocery store? I want to try that on my next trip since I, also, am very prone to motion sickness.

Yes, just the usual hard candy type things. A co-worker who is into "essential oils" told me to use the high-quality oils she buys, but I went with the cheap stuff. Again, I dunno if that (or the banana) worked. Maybe I was just lucky.

If anyone else wants to try it, here's the advice I followed:

1) Make sure your blood sugar is normal as you go on any ride. No highs, no lows. So no empty stomachs, no sugary breakfast foods, etc. Oh, and avoid greasy things like bacon and sausage, or anything else that makes your stomach start out on the wrong . . . uh . . . intestine.
2) Eat a banana about half an hour before you go on motion-sickness inducing rides. Not only does it help with blood sugar levels, it also is not as bad coming back up as some things you could eat (gross thought, I know, but it's something those of us prone to motion sickness have to think about)!
3) Suck on a peppermint candy in the ride queue, and then if you've finished that one by the time you're about to get on the ride, pop another in your mouth.
4) Suck on the peppermint candy throughout the ride.

I didn't precisely follow the advice above. I woke up in the morning, got ready, ate the banana on the way to the bus stop, got to Epcot, walked on to Test Track, popped the first peppermint candy into my mouth on the way to M:S, then walked on to Mission:Space and popped the second one in my mouth while we were standing on the numbers right outside the capsule. I didn't eat or drink anything else from the time I woke up until I was finished with M:S. Afterward I was so happy that I could actually think about food without turning green, I celebrated with a delicious cheese danish from that coffee cart near Universe of Energy. :)

No one I spoke to or whose advice I read could point to any research on this stuff, only anecdotal evidence. And of course all I have is anecdotal evidence as well - I did the above, I rode Mission:Space (original version), and I wasn't sick even though I get sick on normal motion simulator rides and I always end up out for the day if I go on a spinning ride at local carnivals or at the local Six Flags park. But that's just me, and it was just once.

Maybe next time, I'll try this again and ride the teacups! :)

If you try this, please let me know how it goes.

Not to put a damper on things...but I just thought about something. Over the summer at one of our local theme parks some one choked on a piece of gum while riding a rollar coster and was dead before the car came back into the station. Now at two local parks you are not allowed to chew gum or eat candy while riding rides. Just be careful guys. We need all the Dis'ers we can get!
