Well, we are almost 4 weeks into school and my ds has not seen 1 homework assignment yet. He is only in 1st grade but last year in Kindergarten he had work sent home on Mon. and it needed to be returned by Friday. I just feel like he should have SOMETHING to do at home a couple of nights a week other than reading. Am I wrong? I am thinking about calling the school and addressing this.

FYI Ds ENJOYS school and loves doing his homework!

Things change from one year to the next. My neighbor has a daughter who never had a problem with homework. Suddenly, this year (starting with day one) she has become forgetful, etc. No homework today, I forgot my book, I forgot my journal that has list of homework assignments, I forgot to write the assignments down, I forgot........

I say call his teacher.

Have you had a "back to school night" thing or have you talked to the teacher?

Colt who is in Kindergarten didnt have any for the first week, until the teacher talked to everyone at the back to school night and explained what it would be. Then is started up the next day. He now gets it 2 nights a week. And of course Cam in 3rd grade has it 4 nights a week. We are only 2 weeks into school too. ;)

That does seem odd to have none in 1st grade for 4 weeks.

DS13 started 8th grade August 31st. I believe we've seen 1 (maybe 2) homework assignments this yr. He says he uses his free time during school to do the work so he can use his time at home for what he wants to do. He's in all honors classes. Says alot of the kids end up having homework.
Last yrs overall grade avg was a 90.2 so Im assuming everything is going ok.

At this point I KNOW that this is not the case with DS....he LOVES doing well in school....remember he is only in first grade...he hasn't rebelled yet! :rotfl: Also, I talked to one of his classmates Mom's last night and she was upset that there was no homework as well.

Maybe it will start soon?

Different teachers have different thoughts on homework....maybe there is none or very little so that he can get it done in class. When I was in school (ok, a few years back) I can remember that I almost NEVER had homework in any grade. And I was a 4.0 student in high school, valedictorian, yada, yada but I never studied at home.

I would say something. They should have a few assignments a week to get into the habit of doing homework. Does your school use a math program? I know our math program has extensive at home work.

Maybe she's just reviewing for now and hasn't gotten into a lot of new stuff??? Do you know anyone who had this teacher last year? Maybe they can clue you in on the teacher's habits.

I would call or email the teacher though.

Maybe he has one of those teachers that don't believe in homework.

When Jeana was in 2nd grade, she never got homework!! :confused3 Or if she did, it was like 3 math problems, just something that would take no more than a minute to do. Well, Back to School night came and I HAD to ask. This teacher flat out told me that she did NOT believe in homework and would not be assigning it!! :earseek: When I told her I thought it was good that the kids had something to do at home that would reinforce what they learned in school, she told me that if I chose to had my daughter do homework, it would be coming from ME, she was not going to be assigning any. :rolleyes1 This annoyed me so much that I called the principal on it. He assured me that I was the first parent he ever telling him of 'no homework' and also that I was the only parent to ever complain about this teacher (she ran a VERY relaxed classroom....if the kids wanted to sit in the closet, it was fine with her :rolleyes2 ) I have to say, this was the worst year my daughter ever had in school. She needs the structure in class and the added reinforcement of homework. Ironically, a few years later, a met someone whose daughter had her...she was complaining because the teacher was now giving HOURS of homework!! Gee, I guess maybe I wasn't the only parent complaining afterall!! :earboy2:

Not all teachers give homework or maybe he is just getting everything done in class. A quick email to the teacher wouldn't hurt. The rule at our house is that if you don't have homework, you read for x number of minutes-probably 15 minutes in 1st grade.

My 1st grader had homework the first day of school. He's like your son, he really enjoys it. He gets homework 4 nights a week plus we have a log to write down what we read every evening to make sure he gets at least 15 min a day reading time, but we usually read a lot more than that.

Oh how I wish that were the case with my first grader. Monday's homework was "why is the Constitution important to you?" ***? Both of us just stared at the paper for a good 10 minutes....do most first graders have a good handle on the Constitution? Cripes, I'm 42 and I don't have a good handle on the Constitution......

Last night was math, where he is adding numbers like 23+14? Huh?

Evenings have been looooooooong around my house........ :confused3

Last year in 1st my son had a lot of homework. My son's vision teacher told me at the beginning of this school year that his 1st grade teacher is known for giving lots of homework, and that his new 2nd grade teacher is known for hardly giving any.

It seems so drastic! Every day I go in his folder expecting to see homework, but he has only had any 2 times!

I do think that as the school year goes on they get more.

My now 1st grader only had reading every night last year and again this year so far.

When DD was in Kindergarten last year she had homework 4 nights a week.

And the same goes for 1st Grade this year. We have homework 4 nights a week. On top of reading a book and putting it on a book log that gets returned to school on fridays. She has no homework on Friday nights.

My now 2nd Grader had a lot "homework" as a Kindergartner, then in 1st grade it was cut back, very rarely with the exception of spelling lists. Now in 2nd grade she has still only brought home spelling sentences and words. In our Day One meeting the teacher said they wouldn't be getting much homework. I figure the time will come soon enough!

He's in first grade. Maybe the teacher keeps them busy all day long and then wants them to have time to be a kid in the evening. I don't think kids should work all day long, when can they play?

My second grader has less to do this year than he did in first, but my fourth grader has a huge amount every night (three assignments over Labor Day weekend and a test the Tues. they went back.) When I taught, I was never big on homework. I firmly believe kids need time to play and be kids.
If you'd like your child to have homework, why not go to the teachers' store and get a workbook that would reinforce what is being taught?
