Hello - We just returned from a two week trip. The first week was supposed to be in Charleston, but the mosquitoes were so terrible we wanted to leave. We were camping in our RV. The second week was to be spent at Fort Wilderness. We own DVC and have 450 points at the BCV, but they had already been used.
We called WDW and asked if we could arrive 4 nights earlier at the campground - they said there were NO sites available. Also, there were no cabins. We called DVC and they said there NO DVC units (studio or 1 bedroom) available at ANY DVC resort (we were going to borrow some of next years points). Then we called WDW reservations again, and they said there were no rooms except for All Stars and the Animal Kingdom Lodge - deluxe view. We met another family at Illuminiations who were also staying at the AKL as they could not get DVC either.
We took the AKL for almost $1800 for 4 nights. It is a beautiful resort, but both my husband and I VASTLY PREFER our DVC home at the BCV. We really missed the size and amenities of a DVC villa. We also missed the proximity of Epcot and the Boardwalk.
We did stay at Ft. Wilderness and had a really nice time. For you
DVCers with no points and who own a camper of some sort...it is a beautiful campground - you could see the results of the Imaginears at work - themeing is great and everything that could be done to make it a wonderful campground was in place. Now we are not only spoiled by DVC but by Fort Wilderness.
All said, I was surprised that WDW and DVC were so heavily booked. The parks were not crowded, and we enjoyed our visit.
I also am surprised how much more we enjoy WDW than our other vacation efforts since joining DVC. The other vacations just are not as much fun. Sandie B
