No coffee on the bus!

While rope-dropping on our last trip, I was about to board the bus with my latte (with lid!) in hand and the driver said "no drinks allowed". I just kind of stood there stunned for a second, wracking my brain to recall if this had been an issue before...I could swear I've always grabbed a lobby coffee before heading out. After a moment he relented and said "ok, but you can only hold it, no drinking" and I SWEAR he watched me in the mirror to make sure I didn't drink it.

Am I nuts here? Is this a thing?

The overhead does say refrain from eating or drinking but I’ve had beverages several times (water or coke bottles) and never had an issue.

I can think of reasons besides concern for the cost.
If drink is hot and splashes on child
Driver would have to call that in …
Also if drink has spilled on floor bus would be delayed as driver would have to call that in to prevent falls or injury to guest… resulting in delay .

Yes, I’m used to hearing the automated voice saying in English and Spanish no eating or drinking on the bus. Pretty sure it’s the same voice that speaks on the train or whatever they call it 🙂

No eating or drinking is a normal rule on the bus. I've never had an issue with bottles or Disney souvenir mugs, but I haven't tried a coffee cup with a lid.

Like another poster mentioned, I can see where there could be some concern with a hot beverage. If it's a packed bus, there is the potential for it spilling, even with a lid. It could definitely burn someone if it's hot. I've had my water bottle on the bus and the driver never said a word, but it was sealed. I can understand not letting a person bring a hot beverage in a cardboard cup on a busy bus.

They actually do differentiate between them in many areas. Same thing with Moana water area, you can have a bottle of coke or a Stanley mug, but an expensive drink with a lidded top and straw from a Disney stand? Nope.

Sounds like a very grumpy bus driver, not having a very magical day.
Not necessarily grumpy, they are following SOP. The bus drivers (as well as most other CM's in safety related roles, including attractions) are audited on a regular basis by Disney, by CM's in "plain clothes" - dressed like a guest, called an invisible audit. They do them identified as a CM, too (meaning dressed in business casual a with a name tag). One of my close friends does this for Disney and they are looking for a variety of things, safety related. Not following guidelines/procedures could result in a coaching - or more if specific SOP's are not being followed. The auditors have the SOP's in advance and know what to look for and do report their findings, good and not so good, back to leadership.
