I have just received a copy of the school schedule for this year, and I am upset. First, they pushed the start date back by 2 weeks. They do not start until Aug 22. Second, they still want to get out early, so they have taken a lot of days away from the kids during the year. Christmas break is only from Dec 23 to Jan 2. We have reservations (which I will be cancelling) for Dec 26 to Jan 2. I will miss all the holiday decorations this year and they are all so beautiful. Next, I usually spend a long weekend in the cabins in Feb, but they took a day away from that also. Now they get a 5 day weekend in Jan (12th to 16th), which they never have gotten before. Why could they not just extend the Christmas holiday an extra 3 days (for my convenience of course  ). I am now postponing my visit till Jan 11th and staying 5 nights. I have told the kids, and they are also upset, but will get over it. I was so looking forward to running into other people from the Disboards as many of you will be enjoying the Ft. at Christmas. I am so the unhappy camper right now. :sad1:

mrsgus06,
Well there is one good point that comes out of your post. The crowds will definately be alot lower during your January 12 visit versus the December 26 visit. I know it's upsetting to miss Christmas at Disney but maybe next year. We won't be down there until January 6 and I'm hoping there will still be some decorations up. The Osborne lights will be running until January 8 so at least I'll get to see them this year. I've never seen them before.

It sure is frustrating when the schools make changes in the schedule especially when they affect Disney plans.

Sorry to hear you wont be there. Unfortunately that is a common schedule in the district my kids and wife are in, it makes for a pretty hasty drive down in order to get there before Chrsitmas eve.
The most frustrating part is that they dont spring it on you till a week before school starts. I cant tell if they are unorganized or arrogant, you would think something like a schedule could be hammered out at the end of the previous year.
Even as goofy as my work schedule is I know it years in advance.

I would be willing to bet a lunch that somehow you will find a way to be there :teeth:

I'm sorry to hear about that! It would have been nice to let parents know about the changes sooner.

My son is starting kindergarten this year and we got the schedule in May. They have just the week of Christmas & NYE off as well. That's pretty typical here in NJ. There are a lot of days off in October, which surprised me. I think next year we'll use that time to travel, but this year we have to be home for some special birthdays.

That's terrible that you'll have to change your vacation plans. I can't believe they'd wait until now to do that, too. We have from the 19th of December until January 4th off this year. They actually added a couple extra days to ours.

Our school board has never done this but if they ever did I would just tell them to go fly a kite I have holidays planned with my family. Mind you we never run into this issue as we only ever go the first couple weeks of Dec but since getting a new trailer we will be extending that to the last week of Nov and the first 2 weeks of Dec I bet our kids will be so sad to have to miss 3 weeks of school LOL.

Are you planning to drive or fly? If your vacation is supposed to be Dec 26-Jan 2 and school starts again Jan 2 and you are flying, I would just call the kids out for the one day, I don't think it would be too much of a problem. I know I wouldn't cancel a whole vacation for one day.

If you're driving that would be a slightly different situation, though I can't honestly say what I would do in that particular situation.

Good luck!

Yeah... they've completly messed up all school schedules everywhere. Of course here in Florida, they want to start kids earlier, to prep them more for the stupid FCAT test. Which also means they get out a couple weeks earlier.
I always started school in Late August, like the Wensday before labor day or some wierd date like that. and Got out about June 7.

Thankfully, I'm in college now, and schedules are still sane. I start on the 22nd, and will get out like mid december.

Our December reservations were for a full hook up site for the fifth wheel. I have not learned to pull the camper yet, so when we take our short 5 night trip in Jan, we will be staying in the cabins. It is a girls only weekend so hubby is not invited. :wizard:

I am not scared to learn as much as hubby is scared for me to learn! :rotfl2: When we had the travel trailer, he hooked it up to the dually so MY MOM could come over and pull it to the shop (she's the one that won't let my dad drive the motorhome) for repairs. I was under strict orders not to touch that truck or trailer. However, Mom and I decided that there was no time like the present to learn how to pull, so I jumped behind the wheel of the dually, Mom took shotgun and Logan strapped into her car seat chanting "I'm telling". I no sooner pulled out of our neighborhood and onto the main road and who do I pass? That's right, he saw me pulling the camper. :teeth: He chose to call my Mom's cell phone to ask why I was driving and not her. They spent the whole time I was pulling it arguing over the fact that I was pulling it. Happy to report truck, camper and passengers made it safely to Sonny's. :cheer2: I guess I should add that I had no idea how to disconnect it from the truck and Mom had no idea so the nice gentleman working at Sonny's laughed and unhooked my camper. With that siad, I am going to ask to pull it from the rest area on I4 to the Georgia rest area when we go next month to pick it up. Bet I get a big fat NO. Ya just have to love a man willing to drop everything and tow a camper 8 hours for me simply because I ask him to. :love2:

I have a feeling mine will be the same way once we start using our new TT more. I'd love to be able to just hook it up and take off with the kids somwhere. I'd be fine pulling it, but it's the hitch and hooking that up that I'm not sure I could do.
