So I just booked the tour
but I was surprised b/c they said we couldn't bring any cameras. I'm disappointed b/c I wanted to take pix of main street when it wasn't busy - I deliberately picked the earliest tour so I could have "people free" pix of the castle. Is this a new rule or has it always been like that?

The reason you are not allowed to take pictures during the tour is because more than half of it takes place "backstage," or behind-the-scenes. Before or after you check-in, you can take a nice picture of Main Street. Once the tour begins, though, you are going to be moving a lot and it would slow the group down if you wanted to take pictures. And, like I said, the majority of the tour is backstage so you would not be permitted to take any when in these areas.
