No balloons, straws, any other things you might not realize?

I was just reading a couple of posts on the resort forum that talked about not being able to bring balloons into the parks (or AKL), and that fountain soda cups don't come with lids or straws.

Could someone verify that the no lid/straw thing is for the parks, the resorts, or both? Maybe I'm just not getting it, but why is this the case? :confused3

I was wondering if there are any other rules that might take someone by surprise.

TIA!! :goodvibes

That rule only applies to Animal Kingdom and Animal Kingdom Lodge. It is for the safety of the animals. No zoos allow these things.

We stayed at AKL twice. The first time we bought large hard plastic straws with a character on top at the Magic Kingdom. We used them in our refillable mugs at AKL.

I think they also request that you not smoke on the balcony at AKL and they recommend that you keep your curtains drawn because of the surveillance cameras.

The straw looked a bit like this:

I can live without a straw. It is only at ak and akl. I did n't really realize it was at akl even in the restaurants too.

Thanks so much for the info! We're actully going to be staying at the ASMo, so I was really curious about the parks.

The poster on the resort forum didn't indicate whether the lid/straw thing was just AK or the others as well.

(Oh, and no worries about the N/S thing :) ...DD and I have terrible allergies and find it hard to be near smoke at all.)

Right it is only at AK and AKL for the safety of the animals. If you do enter with a balloon it will be taken and stored until check out..... oh yah and remember to keep those AKL blinds closed

dumb question, but what do they do for kids cups? lotsa spills? I need to remember to bring the sippy cup for that meal at Boma.

As a seasoned visitor to Dawa at AK remembering to bring my hard plastic straw is first on my pack list and I put several into all my cargo shorts side pockets while packing for my WDW trip. I see a lot of people have this strange look when their frozen drink is offered and then they find out no straws are available. They do sell straws at AK they are part of some sort of animal souvenir cup available in several shops.

I can't drink soda out of a cup without a straw; it hurts my teeth (cold!!). I bring my own straws into AK for when I eat at Pizzafari. I know that I'm going to properly dispose of my straw, so if it ends up in an animal habitat, I didn't put it there.

I take my own straws too! I know I am throwing them away so I feel ok about it!

If you go to AK or AKL with a balloon Guest Services will "baby sit" it for you while you are inside the park or resort.

I don't think that there are straws at the water partks either. I am not 100% sure but I think that it can mess up the filters it the lids and straws get in them. It is a pain because my DD5 is a clutz. She spills everything. I could be wrong but that is what I remember.

OT for straws, but this was one thing that surprised me. I knew travelling to WDW that no gum is sold anywhere in the parks, hotels, etc. However, I did not realize that they also do not sell gum at MCO. My 2 DSs chewed up all their bubble tape on the trip down, and I didn't know I could not buy gum at the terminal. They chewed through 2 packs of starburst during the flight. I dont think it bothered them at all :) .
