I bought Nintendo DS's for my girls as a surprise. My plan was to surprise them with them on the plane. My sister wondered out loud if they were allowed...

Anyone know? It hadn't even occurred to me that they might be outlawed :confused3 ....I know they wouldn't be able to use them during take-off/landing, and I knew they'd be scrutinized and swabbed for plastique/C4 when passing through security, but are they allowed to be used inflight?

If they're not allowed, I might as well just pack them in the checked luggage and save them for ride wait-times, but I was really hoping they'd be for occupying their time during the flights....:guilty:

My kids used a DS and a GameBoy on our flights in May this year. You need to turn them off during take off and landing (announcements are made) but other than that, they can play their little hearts out !

You may use them once the cabin crew says it is OK.

No use allowed during landing, take off or during heavy turbulence.

Don't know if you are allowed to use multi player mode or picto chat.
I wouldn't think you could us the DS in the above modes due to the signals being transmitted.

Just be prepared at security they may go through your bags & pull them out.

It may ruin the surprise (if you were planning on surprising them on the plane).

Our girls used theirs on the plane without any problems...I can't remember about the picto chat.

I used my DS (yep, I'm a grown-up!) on the plane last month with no problems. They didn't even need me to remove it from my bag at security.

My son had a leapster in his backpack and they didn't even take it out to look at it. So here's hoping that your surprise stays a surprise :)

My daughter travels with hers and its never been looked at or taken out. Just PLEASE get them headphones. There is nothing worse than beep bleep beep all through a flight!

LOl at the headphones...that's a MINIMUM requirement for me! Either that, or turn the sound effects OFF! No worries there! And I have no clue what pict chat is, so they won't either:laughing: ....up until now I have been the "mean mom" when it comes to electronic games etc, so this will blow their socks off! Even if they figure out I have a surprise of some sort, there's no way in a million years they would guess Nintendos!:rotfl2:

I will be ok for the surprise factor at security....my Mom is travelling with us, so the plan is to have dh and Mom herd/take the girls through and then distract them on the other side while I go through with the Nintendos........:rolleyes1

I am the QUEEN of surprises and deceit when it comes to things like this, lol....

Just flew home yesterday. No problem with the Nintendo DS's on the plane. They have to be switched off for take off and landing, also wireless connection cannot be engaged at anytime. Ditto with the headphone recommendation. Security did inspect on the way down - so be prepared.

DH uses his frequently when traveling on business. He's been asked to turn it on while clearing security in Ottawa, but never once on his way back from US airports.

As mentioned above, take off/landing are no use times - and DH was told "no wireless connections ever, please".

My boys used theirs on our flight from Buffalo/Orlando both last Tuesday and last Saturday.
We were playing Mario kart together - 1 game 2 players on 2 DS' - ds on one side of the plane and me..... ummmm I mean other ds on the other side. (I beat the pants off him!! :lmao: )
They never looked at them going through security and never have for us.

They can be used...My 8 year old actually met 3 kids at the airport terminal waiting to fly home, and the 4 kids sent text messages / pictures back and forth throughout the whole flight using their Nintendo DS's..it was so cute~
Nothing was said when they scanned out carry-on bags. Bring them..it will be a life saver..you won't have to hear I'M BORDER every 2 min!
